The Krupp Historical Archive was founded in 1905 as the works archive of the Krupp company and as the family archive of the Krupp family . It is located in the Villa Hügel in Essen .

History until 1945

The establishment in 1905 was related to the preparations for the company anniversary in 1911. Margarethe Krupp also began in 1905 to back up private family documents. The company history and the family history collections remained legally separate for the time being. But they were looked after together and archived.

In addition to collecting documents, the archive also worked as a research center. Two large anniversary celebrations for the group were essentially created in the archive.

Wilhelm Berdow had been the director of the archive since 1913. Successor from 1921 was Fritz Gerhard Kraft. After a phase of financial and personnel restrictions, a short period of upswing followed during the Nazi era before it was affected by the consequences of the Second World War . In 1942, 10 percent of the works archive was destroyed in a bomb attack. In the following years the archive was moved to various locations.

Post-war development

The archive was confiscated by the Allies at the end of the war and returned to the company in 1949. It has been located in Villa Hügel again since 1954. Ernst Schröder became the new head of the works archive. Only now have the works and family archives been combined under the name Krupp Historical Archive .

Since 1976, under the direction of Renate Köhne, the archive has been systematically restructured and expanded according to archival science principles. Since 1984 the holdings have also been indexed with the help of IT. In addition, the extensive film and photo inventory has been maintained since 1990.

The archive participates in scientific research and publications. There is a recent publication on Villa Hügel and one on photography as a historical source and two monographs on the company's history.

Today's structure

With the merger of the Thyssen and Krupp companies , the former Thyssen archive in Duisburg took over the function of the central works archive. The Krupp Historical Archive has been owned by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation since 1998 . It remained in the Villa Hügel and is the center for research into the history of Krupp.

In addition to the holdings of the Krupp company and the family, there are also documents from companies that have merged into the Krupp concern. This includes, for example, documents from the Bochum Association .

In total, the stocks cover nine running kilometers. In addition to files and pamphlets, this also includes numerous historical films and 1.9 million photographs.

In 2006 the archive was named Business Archive of the Year.

The modern historian Ralf Stremmel has been the director of the archive since 2003.
