content
The documentary first describes Tabori's attempts to gain a foothold in the Hollywood film industry as a screenwriter, but essentially focuses on his path to success as a theater maker in New York City, which took him back to Germany, the land of his pursuers. As a Jewish immigrant, the author frequented Hollywood's intellectual circles. However, the Hollywood system and the additional political pressures of the McCarthy era make a career difficult for Tabori. Retreating into private life gives him time to rethink and so he follows his admiration for Bertolt Brecht and develops the idea of a ' poor theater '. Together with his wife Viveca Lindfors , Tabori founded the theater company ' The Strolling Players ', which initially found its first domicile in a converted New York church. Off-Broadway, Tabori has been directing plays since 1955, using methods developed by Kazan and Strasberg (Actors Studio). When Elia Kazan's testimony to the McCarthy committee put him on the 'black list', working conditions in America became increasingly difficult for him. His well-known Brecht productions, with which he toured the USA, brought him back to Europe in 1969. His late career as a theater maker in Germany began with the play 'Die Kannibalen'. Dealing with his Jewish origins and the fate of his family in Germany shape his work. The Berliner Ensemble offers him until his death, a new artistic home in the country for the murder of his father in Auschwitz was responsible.
