Sharon Dodua Otoo (* 1972 in London ) is a British writer , publicist and activist. In 2016 she was awarded the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize .

Life

Sharon Dodua Otoo's parents come from Accra , the capital of Ghana . She was born in London and grew up there with two siblings in the Ilford district .

Otoo studied German and Management Studies at the Royal Holloway College, University of London and obtained a BA (Hons) degree in 1997 .

She has lived in Berlin with her four sons since 2006 . Otoo is active in Phoenix eV and in the Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland (ISD-Bund) eV , of which she was a member from 2010 to 2013. She published a number of articles and commentaries, etc. a. in Missy Magazine , an.schlag , ak - analysis & criticism (ak) , in Tagesspiegel and in African Courier . Your contributions, comments, reports, reviews, feature sections and contributions to the discussion deal with political questions of feminism , whiteness , and also with cultural and educational topics.

Since 2014 Otoo has been working as a project coordinator at RAA Berlin eV and at w_orten und meer . She is the editor of the English-language book series Witnessed, in which five books were published by 2016.

Otoo's creative writing deals with the topics of magical realism , afrofuturism , identity negotiation , relationships and empowerment.

At the invitation of Sandra Kegel , Otoo read the text Mr Gröttrup sits down at the 40th Days of German Language Literature 2016 in Klagenfurt and received the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize . The main characters in the text are based on the engineer and rocket technician Helmut Gröttrup and his wife Irmgard. At the beginning there is a scene at breakfast that makes you think of Loriot . Then a diffuse self tells the story, which at the moment is a breakfast egg that doesn't want to get hard, but was also an earthquake and a lipstick. The juror Meike Feßmann called this I the "changeling of reincarnation", as "I that refuses to be marked".
