It appears monthly, except in July. The publisher is the Association for Political Education, Analysis and Criticism eV Place of publication is Hamburg. A total of 644 issues had been produced by the end of 2018.
history
ak - analyze & criticism is the successor to the workers' struggle (AK), the newspaper of the Communist League (KB). The AK first appeared in December 1971. When the KB disbanded in 1991, the newspaper was retained. For a little over a year, until the summer of 1992, it was produced jointly as the “umbrella AK” by the two KB movements, the majority and the minority. From August 1992 (No. 345) the former KB majority was the sole publisher, and the newspaper received its name, which is still valid today: ak - analyze & criticism. At the end of 1999 the Association for Civic Education, Analysis and Criticism took over the publisher.
Content
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary in December 2011, the newspaper (ak 566) got a new face. Since then it has consisted of four “books”: Politics, Topic, Movement, Society. Thematic categories are Action, Germany, Discussion, Gender, History, International, Culture, Rights and Economy & Social Affairs.
The left-wing debate takes up a lot of space. ak brings contributions from a Marxist, feminist, radical left or even a reformist point of view. She reports on social movements and asks them critical questions. Anti-fascist and anti-racist issues are dealt with regularly. Each issue has a three to five page focus. The main themes in 2018 were: imperial way of life; Black HistoryMonth; 1968; China; Sex work; Soccer world cup; Storage system; Solidarity; Climate; November Revolution; Above the clouds. There are also series of articles. The last series was published as a book in 2018.
The ak project
The editorial team consists of nine people (as of June 2019). There are also employees from the areas of graphics, layout, proofreading, technology, accounting and sales. In total, over 350 authors from Germany and abroad have written for ak in the past four years. Politically, the editorial team is in solidarity with the interventionist left as well as numerous movements and grassroots organizations. A quota for women applies to every issue: At the moment, at least 35 percent of the texts should be written by women. A quota of 30 percent has applied since December 2012.
Fantômas
From April 2002 to summer 2008, a special issue and half-yearly magazine of "analyze & kritik" appeared in 13 issues under the name "Fantômas" .
Scope, supplements, circulation
ak has 36 pages in Berlin format. At irregular intervals a brochure is enclosed with the newspaper, in which mostly already published ak articles on a topic are reprinted.
In the past years these were:
- Critical whiteness. Debate about anti-racist politics and non-discriminatory language
- Battle for Kurdistan. The Rise of Islamic State and the Revival of Left Internationalism
- What can be done against the AfD? Ten suggestions on how the right-wing advance could be stopped.
- Winter 2017/18: rushing and complaining. How right normalization works and what counter-strategies could look like.
- Emission Impossible. What can be done against capitalist climate destruction?
The brochures are also sold separately by aki-Verlag.
ak has (as of August 2019) a circulation of 5,400 copies. Most of them go to subscribers. The rest is mainly sold through left bookstores and train station bookstores.
Website
After the ongoing modernization of the website, all articles from the ak archive should also be accessible. At the moment only a few articles of the current issue are online. In September 2019, the editorial team launched a crowd funding campaign to finance the redesign of the website. Donations totaling 50,000 euros had been collected by mid-October.
