Nassib Lahoud (born November 23, 1944 in Baabdat , † February 2, 2012 in Beirut ) was a Lebanese politician and the nephew of the Lebanese President Émile Lahoud .

Life

Lahoud came from a Christian Lebanese family. After studying engineering in Great Britain, he founded Lahoud Engineering Co. Ltd. in 1972, which is mainly active in the Arab Gulf states .

Because of his activities in the background of the negotiations of the Taif Agreement , he was appointed Lebanese ambassador to the USA . In 1991 he received a seat in the Lebanese parliament as a member of the Metn Region. He was able to successfully defend this mandate in the subsequent elections in 1992, 1996 and 2000. However, he lost his seat in the 2005 elections when the Free Patriotic Movement (CPL), the list of the returning General Michel Aoun , won all the seats in the Metn region.

From the outset, Nassib Lahoud was politically opposed to the pro-Syrian governments that ruled Lebanon in the 1990s. In particular, he repeatedly attacked the economic policy of the then Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri as being too socially unbalanced. He also voted against the mandate extensions imposed by Syria on Élias Hrawi (1995) and Émile Lahoud (2004).

In 2001 he founded the Democratic Renewal Movement, along with around 50 other Lebanese intellectuals . In the same year he joined the so-called Qurnat Shahwan Collection in parliament . This parliamentary group is made up of independent Christian parliamentarians and is characterized by their loyalty to the Maronite patriarch Nasrallah Pierre Sfeir .

After the attack on the vehicle convoy of the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri , the Democratic Renewal Movement joined the anti-Syrian “March 14th Movement”, which included the Courant du futur , Amin Gemayel's Kata'ib, led by Saad Hariri , Elias Atallahs Democratic left , the National block of Carlos Eddé , Dory Chamoun National Liberal party and that of Walid Jumblat led progressive Socialist party members.

Since 1995, Nassib Lahoud has been seen as a promising candidate for the office of Lebanese President, for which he ran in 2007. In 2008 and 2009 he was Minister of State in Fuad Siniora's cabinet .

After a long illness, he died on February 2, 2012 at the age of 68 in the Hôtel Dieu de France clinic in the Aschrafiyya district of Beirut.

Lahoud was married and had two children.
