National Liberal Party (Lebanon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Liberal Party (abbreviation NLP, Arabic حزب الوطنيين الأحرار Ḥizb al-waṭaniyyīn al-aḥrār , French Parti national libéral ) is a political party in Lebanon , which was founded by the former head of state of Lebanon Camille Chamoun in 1958. It is currently run by Dory Chamoun , his son.

Political orientation

The party has taken a tough stance on maintaining Lebanese independence and is a guardian of liberalism and respects the right to freedom of expression and religion . Like most political organizations in Lebanon, the NLP is denominational and has mainly Christians as followers.

history

During the Lebanese civil war from 1975 to 1990, the NLP stood in a row with the mainly Maronite Christian alliance that opposed the Lebanese National Movement (LNM). It had its own armed militia , the Tiger Militia . In 1977 the NLP allied itself with the Kata'ib Party (also called Phalange) and the Lebanese Renewal Party (LRP) and formed the Lebanese Front , a political coalition. Similarly, the militias were united under a central command, the Forces Libanaises under the leadership of the Phalange Bachir Gemayel . In 1980 Gemayel turned against the Tigers and, in a surprise operation, switched off the militia, at the request of Camille Chamoun, some say. The NLP as a party continued, however.

In 2005 the NLP was part of the Qurnat Shahwan Collection , which opposed the Syrian presence in Lebanon ; but she left the alliance because she suspected other members of the government of corruption .
