Dory Chamoun ( Arabic دوري شمعون, DMG Daurī Šamʿūn ; * 1931 ) is a Lebanese politician who leads the National Liberal Party and is also a well-known member of the Qurnat Shahwan Collection , an alliance of politicians, academics, and business people who opposed President Émile Lahoud's pro- Syrian policies .

Life

Dory Chamoun is the older son of the late Camille Chamoun , who was President of Lebanon from 1952 to 1958. First, he became an engineer because he showed less interest in politics than his younger brother Dany Chamoun . After Dany was assassinated in 1990 , he agreed to take over the leadership of the National Liberal Party, which his father had founded in 1958 and which was led by Dany at the time of his death.

He has since traveled extensively promoting the opposition to Syria's military presence in Lebanon in Lebanese communities in France , Canada , New Zealand, and the United States . Dory Chamoun is not fond of foreign support; he has publicly said that he does not trust Israel , accusing it of "abandoning" Lebanese Christians when they were dependent on Israeli aid, and reiterating doubts about the seriousness of American and French demands for Syrian forces to withdraw from it Lebanon expressed. He feels deeply disappointed that countries whose support has been sought by the Lebanese opposition did not, in his view, live up to expectations.

Under Chamoun's leadership, the National Liberal Party boycotted the last three elections to the Lebanese National Assembly in 1992, 1996 and 2000 , alleging that they were manipulated to produce a pro-Syrian majority. After the assassination of the vehicle convoy of the former Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri on February 14, 2005, he was a prominent participant in the Cedar Revolution , which led to the complete withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanese territory and the resignation of the pro-Syrian government and the holding of free and demanded fairer parliamentary and presidential elections.

Chamoun's political boycott did not apply to local politics. He is the mayor of Dair el-Qamar .

Dory Chamoun suffered several personal tragedies in his life, including the murder of his brother Dany, but also his youngest son. He has another son, Camille Chamoun Jr., who was also politically active and who voted unsuccessfully in the May and June 2005 elections.

On January 27, 2006, Dory Chamoun declared his candidacy for the vacant seat of the Maronites in the constituency of Baabda -Aley against May Chidiac . However, the seat went to Pierre Daccache.
