Carlos Eddé

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carlos Eddé (* 1956; Arabic كارلوس إدة) is a Lebanese politician . He has been the chairman of the Lebanese National Bloc since 2000 and has succeeded his uncle Raymond Eddé . His choice came as a surprise because Carlos Eddé had lived in Brazil since 1976 and at the time hardly spoke any Arabic. Since 2004 he took part in the opposition movement. Eddé was involved in the opposition's agreement on the common strategy that led to the withdrawal of Syrians from Lebanon. In the parliamentary elections in Lebanon in 2005 he ran unsuccessfully for the seat of the Maronites in Byblos , a long-standing stronghold of his party and was clearly defeated by the candidate of the Free Patriotic Movement . Politically, he spoke out against the influence of religions in Lebanese politics and presented a draft law to reform the complicated electoral system. He rejects Syrian interference and supports calls for Hezbollah to be disarmed .
