Sándor Weöres
Sándor Weöres (pronunciation: [ ˈʃaːndor ˈvørøʃ ], born June 22, 1913 in Szombathely , † January 22, 1989 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian writer.
Life
Weöres published his first poems in 1928, when he was 15 years old. From 1932 onwards his works were published by Mihály Babits in the important literary magazine Nyugat . From 1933 to 1938 he studied at the University of Pécs and completed his studies in philosophy and aesthetics with a doctoral thesis with the title A vers születése (Eng. "The Birth of the Poem"). He then worked as a librarian and as a freelance writer.
Since he rejected the socialist realism propagated by the state authorities and instead wrote poems with a wide range in form and content (partly children's poems, partly poetry with a strong influence of Eastern philosophy and with a focus on myth and nature), he was able from 1949 published very little under the communist government, including A hallgatás tornya ( Eng . "The Tower of Silence") in 1956. When his poem Tűzkút ( Eng . "Fountain of Fire") was published in Paris in 1964 , Weöres also received recognition in Hungary and was allowed to publish freely from now on. For example, Psyché, a collection of letters and poems by a fictional 19th century woman , appeared in 1972. In 1977 he was also responsible for the publication of the anthology of poetry Három veréb hat szemmel .
