Josef Albo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Albo (* around 1380; † around 1444) was a Jewish religious philosopher in Spain .

His main work, sefer ha-iqqarim ("principles"), was an attempt to establish a philosophical systematization of the Jewish religion by reducing the 13 Articles of Faith of Moses ben Maimon to three principles: God, revelation, retribution (reward and punishment). The Torah is described as the only divine law and Judaism as the revealed religion that best harmonizes with philosophy. Any dogmatic bondage of Judaism is rejected. The work was later very well received by Moses Mendelssohn .

Albo's eclectic work was widespread (first printed in 1485 by Joshua Solomon Soncino ).

In 1413/1414 Albo defended the Jewish side in the forced dispute at Tortosa .
