Alfonz Bednár

Alfonz Bednár (born October 19, 1914 in Rožňová Neporadza , today Neporadza, Slovakia ; † November 9, 1989 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak prose poet , screenwriter and translator.

Life

Bednár comes from a rural family and attended elementary school in his hometown. He attended high school in Nitra (1926–1930) and Trenčín (1930–1934). After graduating from high school, he studied at the Philosophical Faculties in Prague and Bratislava. He worked as a secondary school teacher in Liptovský Mikuláš and Bardejov . After 1945 he worked as an information officer in Bratislava, was editor of the Pravda publishing house and editor of the Slovenský spisovateľ publishing house . Since 1960 he has worked as a dramaturge and screenwriter for state studios in Bratislava .

Create

During the war he published several articles in the specialist literature on teaching the Slovak language. After 1945 he translated American and English prose. At the same time he published books of poetry for children. With his first novel Bednár introduced himself as an artistically mature epic prose writer. He was an author who inwardly was able to defend himself against the finished specifications of the ideology of the fifties. He went his own creative way.

When he wrote his novels, Bednár started from the conviction that the past shaped people differently, such as the Slovak National Uprising , and also determined his decisions and actions in the post-war period. In an artistic way he portrayed the instinctual sides in people - including those that were on the “right” side of history during the uprising. Critics at the time described his works as “class unfriendly” and “abstractly humanistic”.

Bednár described the Slovak village in its 50-year development in a modern, epic way. His efforts were slowed down by the censorship, so the complete processing of the problems of the village could only appear after the fall of the communist regime. In 1992 his novel-epic Role (The Field) was published.

In the second half of the sixties Bednár began to orientate himself towards the present. Through his books he posed uncomfortable questions to the socialist present. Satirically and ironically, he denounced the shortcomings of everyday colloquial language, unsuitable words, used word mechanisms, nonsensical slogans and especially the meaninglessness of popular texts. He chose the form of allegory, parable and satire. His books from that time are criticisms of people of modern times who lack positive inner forces and family ties that are shaped by feelings.

He wrote a travelogue and is the author of several screenplays for film and television. In 1963 Alfonz Bednár published the first volume in the history of Slovak literature, a university textbook with which he presented an individual view of literature and a new conception of literary history.
