Caio Fernando Abreu

Caio Fernando Abreu (born September 12, 1948 in Santiago , Rio Grande do Sul , † February 25, 1996 in Porto Alegre ) was a Brazilian writer.

Caio Fernando Loureiro de Abreu studied literature and theater in Porto Alegre and has lived as a freelance writer in São Paulo since 1968 . In 1968, at the time of the Brazilian military dictatorship, he was on the wanted list of the DOPS secret police and in the 1970s went into self-elected exile in Europe for a year. He described the innumerable contradictions of urban Brazil. In 1996 he died of the consequences of his HIV infection.

Abreu wrote novels, short stories, theater texts, song texts and scripts. His fourth volume of short stories Morangos mofados from 1982, which has been praised by literary critics, is considered a magnum opus . His works have been translated into German, English, French, Italian, Croatian, Dutch, Swedish and Spanish. His novel Onde andará Dulce Veiga was made into a film by Guilherme de Almeida Prado in Brazil in 2008.
