Maria Hummitzsch

Maria Hummitzsch (born December 14, 1982 in Magdeburg ) is a German literary translator from English and Portuguese . She has been the second chairwoman of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , VdÜ , since March 2017 .

life and work

Hummitzsch studied in Leipzig, Lisbon and Florianópolis compartments translation , psychology and African Studies . She has been working as a literary translator since 2011, e.g. B. by David Foster Wallace, Shani Boianjiu and Beatriz Bracher, as well as editor and presenter . She is a freelancer at Textmanufaktur Leipzig and since 2012 co-organizer of a German-Brazilian translation workshop, a workshop for mutual further training. Since 2013 she was already a board member of the VdÜ with other tasks. She co-founded the translator center at the Leipzig Book Fair in 2015 .

Hummitzsch lives with her daughter in Leipzig .

As a "transparent translator"

When reading a book by foreign language authors, readers tend to forget that the words, with all their images and nuances, come from the translator, not the author. On Jerome's Day, many German-speaking translators around the world give an insight into their work. The format is now widely used under the title “transparent translator”, especially on this day, September 30th every year, or at book fairs .

For example, Hummitzsch worked live on a text on the occasion of Hieronymus Day 2014, while the Leipzig audience looked over her shoulder, asked questions and participated. On a large screen, viewers saw the source text in English and next to it everything that happened in the transmission process, while the translator wrote in German, the target language. The audience also experienced how she researched facts on the Internet and leafed through electronic reference works, whether she noted three German variants of a word next to each other or provided her text with comments, question marks and other markings for later further work. This is how Hummitzsch showed her work on Things I Have Done I Cannot Undo by the Israeli author Shani Boianjiu, a short story that has since appeared.
