mephisto 97.6 is the local radio of the University of Leipzig and the first licensed university radio in Germany. Since it started broadcasting in 1995, it has appeared as a training channel for the University of Leipzig and as a non-commercial, independent local medium for the greater Leipzig area .

mephisto 97.6 broadcasts Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the VHF frequency 97.6 MHz and in the Leipzig cable network on 93.6 MHz and can be received by over a million people in the broadcast area. The local radio is located on the campus of Leipzig University on Augustusplatz.

Since January 31, 2018, the station has been broadcast via DAB + in a 24-hour small-scale test operation of the SLM in Leipzig on Kanal 6C. In addition, mephisto 97.6 transmits its 24/7 program in a live stream.

idea

The aim of mephisto 97.6 is to combine training and practice under real working conditions. The program is not aimed exclusively at students and in the local section consists of current information about what is happening in the greater Leipzig area . The average word share of all programs is 40 percent.

The program is designed exclusively by students.

history

The idea of a university radio has been pursued by students and the management of the Institute for Communication and Media Studies at the University of Leipzig since 1992. At the open days in May 1993 and 1994, the first programs were broadcast on campus, produced with technology that was still available from the GDR era .

When the Saxon State Authority for Private Broadcasting and New Media advertised the 97.6 MHz frequency for Leipzig , a concept for a university radio was worked out in seminars. After a hearing at the Media Council in September 1994, mephisto 97.6 was awarded the contract and thus the opportunity to broadcast up to six hours of programming per working day. Up to now, four hours of this are used every day.

With your own broadcast license as a non-commercial Leipzig local radio station, there are also some conditions associated with it: the program requires a word share of at least 40 percent. In addition, no advertising may be broadcast, only certain program elements, such as fixed sections, may be sponsored and presented.

Mephisto 97.6 went on air for the first time on May 31, 1995 at 6:00 p.m. and shares the 97.6 MHz frequency in Leipzig with the transmitter R.SA (then Radioropa Infowelle Sachsen , from 1999 oldie.fm).

The journalism teacher Walther von La Roche , who at the time had taken on an honorary professorship at the University of Leipzig, was involved in setting up the radio station . The founding members included the still active program director Bernd Schorb , Rüdiger Steinmetz , who was elected to the media council of the Saxon State Authority for Private Broadcasting and New Media (SLM) in 2010 and thus resigned his office at mephisto 97.6, as well as Hartmut Warkus, who died in 2011 until 1998 the then Leipzig journalism lecturer Martinöffelholz .

The first editors-in-chief were Christian Brockert and Sven Jánszky .

In the course of the rebuilding of the University of Leipzig, the station moved into new studio space in November 2009 after broadcasting from an interim studio from 2006 onwards. It now has four broadcast and production studios, seven editorial offices, a conference room and a seminar room. The association Freundeskreis mephisto 97.6 eV, to which around 150 former employees of the station belong, acts as a former organization and financial supporter.

Since January 31, 2018, mephisto 97.6 has been broadcasting on VHF in addition to the four hours on weekdays in a 24-hour operation on DAB + and in the live stream.

structure

editor

The organizational hierarchy at mephisto 97.6 is roughly based on the structure of public broadcasters, but in contrast to these, more permeable. The following principle applies: Whoever enters the station has the right to be trained and, as a newcomer , receives the status of editor . This makes him a volunteer and freelancer.

Editor on duty (RvD)

Experienced editors have the opportunity to train as an RvD. During this training period, they should learn to take responsibility for entire programs and to lead editors themselves.

Head of Department (RL)

Above the RvDs, who oversee individual programs, are the department heads who are in office for one semester each. Her tasks include leading meetings within the department , ensuring and organizing the training of editors, and conducting personnel management .

Editor-in-Chief (CR)

The content authority is the editor-in-chief , which works independently and holds office for one year. The editors-in-chief network the broadcaster as a whole, maintain an overview of the content and clarify relevant problems and questions, organize seminars and evaluations and present the broadcaster to the outside world. In addition, the editor-in-chief is considered to be the decisive authority in training and personnel issues.

Program Directorate (PD)

The representative in terms of press law is the program directorate, which consists of lecturers and professors who are appointed and permanently employed by the University of Leipzig. You bear legal responsibility and represent mephisto 97.6 vis-à-vis the university management as well as the approval and supervisory authorities.

Training paths

free collaboration

The freelancer is the loosest form of cooperation. You are not pursuing a specific training goal, but you can still have your performance certified.

Trial weekend

The trial weekend is used to get to know the radio station. Offered at least once a semester, interested parties have the chance to actively participate in the editorial work on the station for two days and gain initial experience.

internship

There is the possibility of doing two types of internship. Secondary level I pupils can complete the mandatory internship provided by the school (usually two weeks). During this time, they have the opportunity to work in one or two departments in a journalistic and editorial capacity and learn skills such as research , interviewing, writing and speaking for radio or audio editing and apply them in practice.

The second option is the longer internship. Here, for example, students can have the internship recognized as a study achievement. A voluntary internship is also possible as proof of advanced training. Depending on the requirements, the long internship is individually organized, accompanied and designed by the editor-in-chief .

academy

The summer or winter academy is offered during the semester break. The academy is a six-week full-time course in which the participants go through all departments according to a fixed plan. The extensive practical part is supplemented by seminars, which are led by professionals from the media industry.

Radio forge

In terms of content, based on the academy, the RadioSchmiede serves as an open training concept in which the participants determine the length of their training themselves. Services performed are signed on a routing slip. Here, too, it is important to complete a prescribed practical part and attend several seminars that are regularly offered by experienced editors. In contrast to the internship and the academy, no application is required for RadioSchmiede.

Radio radio elective

The radio elective is aimed at Bachelor students from the humanities and social sciences. It was offered for the first time in the 2013/14 winter semester and extends over three semesters. It enables practical training in all classic radio presentation forms. Theoretical, media studies and journalistic content are interlinked with daily, future-oriented but also traditional radio practice.

Master's degree (MA) radio

The University of Leipzig is the only institution in Germany to offer a master's degree in radio. In addition to classic seminars and lectures, this course offers an extensive practical part, which is largely completed at mephisto 97.6. The last master’s students were enrolled in the 2012/13 winter semester.

Key qualification module (SQ) radio

For students of the social sciences and humanities faculty at the University of Leipzig, the key qualification radio is available as an elective module. Similar to the MA radio, this consists of an extensive practical part that is provided exclusively by mephisto 97.6. The key qualification was last offered in the 2013 summer semester.
