She first worked as a teacher, then until 1953 as a journalist for the then still public television broadcaster RTF . Between 1962 and 1968 she wrote three works with her younger sister Flora (1924–2001). Benoîte Groult's first novel La part des choses was published in 1972.

In 1951 she married the writer Paul Guimard (1921-2004), with whom she also had a daughter.

In 2010 she was appointed Commander of the Legion of Honor .

reception

Groult primarily wrote texts on the history of feminism , discrimination against women and the aversion of men towards women ( misogyny ), which were prepared in a socio-psychological and historical manner and in essayistic form .

In France, her revealing novel Salt on Our Skin (1988) was first considered a pornographic scandal book; the attention it attracted, however, made Groult well-known and with her other publications she was recognized throughout Europe as an important feminist. In Germany, salt on our skin , the story of an unusual passion between a Parisian intellectual and a down-to-earth Breton fisherman, became a bestseller with more than three million copies sold . In 1992 the novel by Andrew Birkin was filmed under the same title ; one of the producers was Bernd Eichinger .
