Soledad Puértolas Villanueva (born November 3, 1947 in Saragossa ) is a Spanish writer.

Life

Soledad Puértolas grew up in Saragossa and moved to Madrid, where she began studying political science. However, she had to cancel it due to political problems. She then studied journalism at the Escuela de la Iglesia and from 1968 to 1970 was the editor of the magazine “España Económica”. At the same time, a lawsuit forced her to drop out of political science.

Soledad married at the age of 21 and relocated to Trondheim , Norway with her husband . After returning to Spain, her husband received a scholarship and they both moved to Santa Barbara , California. There she obtained an MA (Master of Arts) in Spanish and Portuguese Language and Literature from the University of California .

In 1979 she returned to Madrid and devoted herself to writing. At the same time she was an advisor to the Ministry of Culture under the then Minister of Culture Javier Solana . Her tasks included coordinating the worldwide spread of the Spanish language.

Works

So far, five novels and two volumes of stories by her have been published in Spain. The novel "It remains the night" ("Queda la noche", Barcelona 1989), for which she received one of the most prestigious literary prizes, the Premio Planeta , is her first book publication in German translation.

Awards

Soledad Puértolas won the Sèsamo Prize in 1979 with her work "El bandido doblemente armado" (The double armed bandit), in 1989 the Planeta Prize with her work "Queda la noche" (The night stays) and in 1993 the Anagrama Prize her essay “La vida oculta” (Life in secret). She has been a member of the Real Academia Española since November 2010 .
