Course of the Bickgraben on the eastern edge of Groß Schwülper |
The Bickgraben is a brook on the Papenteich plateau with a catchment area of around 10 km² north of the city of Braunschweig . The brook flows into the Oker from the right in Groß Schwülper and is part of the Weser river system .
course
The brook arises on the western outskirts of Vordorf and flows mainly in a west-southwest direction. It passes Eickhorst to the north, before Lagesbüttel is crossed by Kreisstraße 58, which runs in an east-west direction, and a little later it divides into two straight arms. These unite in the local area of Lagesbüttel, where the district road 56 crosses the stream. On the eastern outskirts of Groß Schwülper , the bank is lined with trees and integrated into a playground and park-like area. In addition to a pond on the south side of the stream, there is also a natural rain retention basin for the Dösskamp settlement on the north side, which is connected to the course of the stream. The Bickgraben flows further through the town center, south of the church and reaches the Oker near the main road 321.
Flora and fauna
The Bickgraben is a heavily developed and straightened body of water that has also been artificially deepened. Most of it runs through heavily used arable land and serves as a drainage ditch. The arable land often extends directly to the edge of the embankment. In some areas, trees have started to be planted along the banks. So far, however, these have neither been able to provide sufficient shade for the stream nor do the roots reach the water's edge. As a result, the stream becomes weed regularly in summer and often falls dry for some time.
The bottom of the water consists mainly of gravel and mud. The water quality report of the state of Lower Saxony classifies the stream as moderately polluted (quality class II). The fauna is also affected by the occasional drying up of the stream. Only 15% of the species found could be clearly classified as flowing water organisms. In total there are still 4 animal species that are listed on the Red List of Lower Saxony:
- a subspecies of the caddis flies
- two subspecies small-water beetles
- a subspecies of the bladder snail
