Prêmio Juca Pato
The Prêmio Juca Pato is a Brazilian literary award . It was launched in 1962 at the suggestion of Marcos Rey to honor each year the book that best expressed Brazilian culture the previous year. The title of Intelectual do Ano is attributed to the winner . The prize is named after Juca Pato , a figure created by the journalist João Lélis Vieira (1880–1948) and immortalized by the draftsman Benedito Carneiro Bastos Barreto (1896–1947). Juca Pato was a comic book character, intelligent and poorly dressed, who, like the majority of writers, struggled through life.
With the exception of 1993 and 1994, the prize has been awarded once a year since 1962 by the Folha de São Paulo newspaper and the Brazilian writers' association UBE (União Brasileira de Escritores) in São Paulo .
