Milton Hatoum

Milton Hatoum (born August 19, 1952 in Manaus , Amazonas , Brazil) is a Brazilian writer of Lebanese origin.

Life

In 1968 Hatoum went from Manaus to Brasília and then to São Paulo , where he studied architecture. With a scholarship, he studied in Madrid and Barcelona from 1979 and then as a postgraduate at the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1984 he returned to Manaus and taught French literature at the Universidade Federal do Amazonas and as a visiting professor of Brazilian literature at the University of California at Berkeley . In 1989 his first novel Relato de um certo Oriente was published , for which he received the Jabuti Literature Prize for the first time . For his second novel, published in 2000, he also received the Jabuti Prize.

Both novels reflect the tensions in the life of Lebanese immigrants, which result from living in two different worlds, the tropical Amazon region and their own cultural background.

In his two novels Dois Irmãos and Cinzas do Norte , Hatoum criticizes the Brazilian military dictatorship .

Hatoum's novels were translated into Italian, English, French. German and Spanish translated. Hatoum has u. a. Works by George Sand and Gustave Flaubert translated into Portuguese.

In 2018 he was awarded the Prêmio Juca Pato for A Noite da Espera .
