The Literature Prize of the City of Munich was founded in 1928 on the initiative of Thomas Mann by the Literature Advisory Board of the City of Munich as the City of Munich 's Poetry Prize . Since 1957 the name has been the Literature Prize , and in 1991 it was transformed into the award with today's name and new objectives. Initially, it was awarded every two years. The prize has been awarded every three years since 1999, alternating with the Journalism Prize of the City of Munich and the Translation Prize of the City of Munich . The prize money was increased to 10,000 euros.

The award aims to honor “a literary oeuvre that is outstanding in style and content”. The award winners must “come from the Munich region or have a close connection to Munich as the place of their origin or their work”. The right of nomination lies with a commission appointed by the city council, consisting of expert jurors and members of the voluntary city council.
