Tilman Spengler (born March 2, 1947 in Oberhausen ) is a German sinologist, writer and journalist.

Live and act

Spengler studied Sinology , Political Science and modern history in Heidelberg , Taipei and Munich and worked for several years at the Max Planck Institute for research into the living conditions of the scientific and technical world in Starnberg . In 1972 he completed his doctorate in Munich.

He then worked for six years as a research assistant to the philosopher Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker . In addition to his academic work, he published regularly in Die Zeit and in GEO . In 1991 he published the novel biography Lenin's Brain , which has been translated into twenty-one languages. In 1992 Spengler became head of the arts section of the weekly newspaper Die Woche . In 2003 he published his short story book when men misrepresent themselves .

Spengler is a founding member of the Lübeck literary meeting " Gruppe 05 ". Since May 2006 he has been part of the “Sinologie Heidelberg Alumni Network” (SHAN) e. V. ( Sinological Seminar of the University of Heidelberg ) as a member of the Board of Trustees. From 1980 until she was temporarily hired in 2008, he was co-editor of Kursbuch magazine . He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .

Spengler is a China expert and was u. a. 1976 during the great earthquake there. He also accompanied the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in 2001 and, in May 2008, the then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on visits to the country. In an interview in 2010, he described his relationship with China as follows: “For the intensity of close observation, the feeling of foreignness is very important to me. After a few weeks you can no longer see, hear or smell the special features. [...] For me, China is a place with a fairly high density in many areas of life. I don't know how long that keeps you thinking. I always left China early enough before it could turn into a flat phase. ”More recently, Spengler has stated that large parts of German Sinology are silent on the current Chinese political situation. After all, this is in contrast to the earlier adulation of Maoism . In 2010 Spengler gave the laudation on the occasion of the Hermann Kesten Prize being awarded to Liu Xiaobo , who was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize a little later. The sinologist was involved in the preparation of the Art of Enlightenment exhibition at the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, which has been on display for a year since April 1, 2011. In March 2011, on the occasion of her opening of his mission for Liu Xiaobo and other dissidents, Spengler was denied entry to China to accompany Foreign Minister Westerwelle. As a reason for the entry ban, a Chinese cultural official said that Spengler had "hurt the feelings of the Chinese people". In an interview, Spengler described the project as a “meaningful event”, but such events also provided “legitimizing impulses”.

Spengler wrote and moderated the 101-part series "Classics of World Literature" for the TV station BR-alpha , the episodes of which were broadcast for the first time from 2009 to 2011.

Spengler lives in Ambach on Lake Starnberg and in Berlin. He is married to the actress Daphne Wagner and has one daughter. Tilman Spengler is the great nephew of Oswald Spengler .
