Gottfried Kölwel

Gottfried Kölwel (born October 16, 1889 in Beratzhausen , † March 21, 1958 in Graefelfing ) was a German poet , playwright and storyteller .

Life

Kölwel studied in Amberg and Munich. In 1914, with special support from Martin Buber , his first book of poems, "Gesänge gegen den Tod", was published by the renowned Kurt Wolff publishing house in Leipzig . Kölwel was in contact with Hermann Hesse and attracted attention in literary circles. In 1916 he met Franz Kafka when he was reading In der Strafkolonie in the bookstore of Hans Goltz .

Gottfried Kölwel is one of the authors of late literary expressionism . Kölwel's culture-critical approach and his criticism of modernity go back to the youth movement of the twenties. He fights less against an antagonism between town and country than rather egoism and poor social attitudes. His criticism of capitalism is criticism of the exploitation of humans and the destruction of nature. The destruction of supposedly unworthy life under National Socialism is also criticized.

Honors

Birthplace of Göttfried Kölwel in Beratzhausen

The primary school in his birthplace and a square in Beratzhausen were named after him. There is also a Gottfried-Kölwel-Strasse in Neutraubling . Since 1949 he was a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry . In 1956 he was awarded the Nordgau Culture Prize of the city of Amberg in the " Poetry " category.
