In addition to a biography of the castrati Filippo Balatri, a number of novels and a short story appeared. From 2015 to 2020, three titles were included in the long list of the German Book Prize . Wunnicke's 2020 novel The Lady with the Painted Hand was the most successful. He was shortlisted for the German Book Prize and was awarded the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize. The theme is the fictional encounter between the German explorer Carsten Niebuhr and a Persian astronomer.

Christine Wunnicke's characters include a Scottish rock musician, the two film pioneers Selig and Boggs and the Japanese neurologist Shimamura . Her characters are often "not only eccentric and each blessed with a very special obsession, but also historically guaranteed", but develop a life of their own in the books. As the author herself states, they are “disintegrating people, fragmented figures”. Again and again she describes "intermediate states, border crossings, dubious identities, doppelgangers."

In the justification of the jury for the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize it is said that Wunnicke had created an independent work in which the genres would be mixed, starting with learned grotesques and historical miniature novels to scientific satire. In addition, she mastered the scientific jargon of different times, mythological and religious idioms and their parodies .
