Dieter Hanitzsch (born May 14, 1933 in Schönlinde , Czechoslovakia ) is a German cartoonist , journalist and book author .

Life

Hanitzsch is a trained brewers and maltsters and studied brewing in Weihenstephan ( Technical University of Munich ) with the conclusion brewery engineer and subsequently business administration at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with the completion of a degree in business . After completing his studies, he first worked as an advertising manager at the Munich brewery Paulaner , for which he invented the slogan “Good, better, Paulaner” in 1964 .

From 1964 to 1985 he worked as a business journalist for Bavarian TV . On the side, he began to draw caricatures, including for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Münchner Abendzeitung and, from 1980 until they were discontinued in 1992, regularly for the Illustrierte Quick .

In 1985 Hanitzsch made caricaturist his main profession. His drawings were mainly printed in the Abendzeitung and the Süddeutsche Zeitung , as well as in the Bonner General-Anzeiger , in the Berliner Morgenpost and in Focus . For the ARD , he from 1990 to 1994 as a signatory to the children's program Floris Zapp Zarapp operates. In the 1980s, he drew the comic series Patrick, Sheriff of the Animals for Freizeit Revue .

Hanitzsch draws in particular caricatures on Bavarian state and federal politics. His works have been published in over 50 books and exhibited several times. His books on Franz Josef Strauss became bestsellers.

Hanitzsch illustrated all of Dieter Hildebrandt's books and, together with Herbert Riehl-Heyse from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, created the character “ The Great Max ”, which he drew from the beginning and has also been writing since Riehl-Heyse's death in 2003. From 2007 to 2018 Hanitzsch was a regular guest on the TV show Sunday regulars on Bavarian TV.

Hanitzsch describes himself as a journalist who draws instead of writing. At the award of the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class in 2014, Federal President Joachim Gauck stated that it was particularly thanks to Hanitzsch that “the art form of caricature was an essential part of democratic culture in the Federal Republic of Germany”. According to Gauck, he “gave the caricature an important political function as a critical element”. This is underscored by the award of the "Jubilee Prize of the Bavarian Cabaret Prize 2018" by Bavarian Television. The jury gave the following reasons: "As a master of pointing, Dieter Hanitzsch not only succeeds in intelligently and astutely commenting on the abysses of federal and state politics, but at the same time transforms the severity of the knowledge gained into joy of life with humor and ease."

In May 2018, Hanitzsch came under criticism in the Süddeutsche Zeitung for a caricature by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that was viewed or interpreted as supposedly anti-Semitic . The caricature was classified as anti-Semitic by, among others, Samuel Salzborn , the Federal Government's Anti-Semitism Commissioner, Felix Klein , and the historian Michael Wolffsohn . Anti-Semitism researcher Wolfgang Benz , however, expressed that he could see no anti-Semitism. "I do not see the usual clichés that are used for visualization of resentment" Hanitzsch even denied an anti-Semitic intent and told the Jewish General , with the cartoon, only the policy of Netanyahu wanting to criticize. The editor-in-chief of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) apologized for the publication of the caricature and shortly thereafter ended the collaboration with Hanitzsch. Hanitzsch has been working for the Münchner Abendzeitung since June 2018 .

A bundle of his work is in the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany.
