Marian Chace (born October 31, 1896 , Providence , Rhode Island , USA ; † July 19, 1970 ) was a pioneer of dance therapy .

In 1916 she began studying at the Corcoran School of Art. From 1923, on the advice of her physiotherapist , she took dance lessons at the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts . She soon had her first appearances as a dancer, choreographed and taught. In doing so, she began to develop her dance therapeutic method. In June 1942 she was asked to work with the mentally ill at St. Elisabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC . She later also worked at Chestnut Lodge , a private psychiatric clinic in Rockville, Maryland known for its progressive therapists and innovative approaches to psychiatry .

Marian Chace was instrumental in founding the American Dance Therapy Association , whose first president she became in 1966.

The chace technique

Marian Chace noticed again and again in her students at her dance school that very many feelings of loneliness, clumsiness, shyness and aggressiveness were expressed, so that she changed the aim of her lessons. She began to use her dance training no longer as a lesson in an art form, but as a medium of communication and body awareness.

The chace technique is now an integral part of dance therapy work. United in a circle and reflected respectfully in their movements by the dance therapist, the patients experience the expression of their emotions without having to talk about them.
