The Division 2 1934/35 was the second staging of the second highest French football league , officially under the name Championnat de Division 2 firmierte. Second division champions were the CS Metz .
The games took place between August 26, 1934 and June 2, 1935. There was no winter break; point games were also played on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
societies
Eligible to participate were the eleven clubs that had neither been promoted to the first division nor given up their professional status after the previous season . The two clubs from Bordeaux, CD Español and SC de la Bastidienne, had merged with each other, so that in this summer of 1934 only ten “second division from the very beginning” started. There was also a first division relegated team and three newcomers who had received a license for the first time. The second division was, unlike in its premiere season, this time played in a single season.
Thus the following 14 teams were represented this season:
- six clubs from the far north ( Racing Roubaix , US Tourcoing , newcomer Racing Lens , US Valenciennes-Anzin , Racing Calais , AC Amiens ),
- one from the capital (relegated CA Paris ),
- one from the northeast (renamed CS Metz this season ),
- three from the northwest ( Le Havre AC , FC Rouen , newcomer SM Caen ),
- two clubs from Lyonnais ( AS Saint-Étienne , newcomer AS Villeurbanne ),
- one from the southwest (the merged FC Hispano-Bastidienne Bordeaux ).
From the Mediterranean, however, no team played in Division 2 in 1934/35 , because OGC Nice , who were relegated to CA Paris, had returned directly to the amateur camp.
There was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division. On the other hand, a second division could only be relegated if he surrendered his license or if it was revoked, and previous amateur teams from Division d'Honneur could only be promoted to Division 2 for the following season if they received approval from the association , professional To adopt status.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. If there was also a tie - as this season between Tourcoing and Saint-Étienne - the overall result of the two direct encounters between these opponents decided. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
The fight for advancement was open for a long time. Rouen and especially newcomer Lens were in first place repeatedly until the end of April - and Calais until the turn of the year - before Metz finally took over the top with his extremely good goal difference. Valenciennes and Roubaix also stayed within reach of the promotion ranks in the final stages. Second place went to Valenciennes, who remained undefeated in front of their own audience and only had to concede two draws. As a mirror image of this, bottom of the league, Bordeaux, only got a draw away and conceded a total of 98 goals, was in 14th place from the start and, like Villeurbanne a little later, was beaten early. As in 1933/34, Jean Nicolas from the “Red Devils” from Rouen secured the top scorer's crown ; however, he only managed 30 goals this season, 24 fewer than last year.
Tourcoing and Bordeaux gave back their professional license after the end of the season. For the following season , the relegated from Division 1 , SO Montpellier and SC Nîmes , as well as seven clubs that were granted a license for the first time or again: US Boulogne , FCO Charleville , Olympique Dunkerque , FC Nancy , OGC Nice , Stade Reims and AS Troyes-Savinienne .
