The Division 2 1971/72 was the 33rd edition of the second highest French football league . It was an open championship with professional and amateur clubs. The US Valenciennes-Anzin became second division champions .

societies

The 39 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated teams and six previous amateur third division teams. These 48 participants played in three groups, mostly divided according to regional criteria. Only the respective group winners were eligible for promotion. There was no relegation between the worst-placed first division clubs who were not directly relegated and the best second division clubs who were not directly eligible for promotion this time either.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

In all three seasons, the relegated division from Division 1 dominated ; Strasbourg-Meinau succeeded particularly clearly in Group C, which was already leading the table two months before the end of the season. Sedan (with Troyes and Lens) and especially Valenciennes-Anzin (with Limoges and Brest), however, had to fight off stubborn competitors for a relatively long time. The fight against relegation, which threatened a particularly large group of teams due to the intended reduction of the second division to 36 participants for the following season , was also due to some early decisions - namely in groups A (Creil, Évreux) and C. (Martigues, GFC Ajaccio) - but also shaped by decisions that were actually made on matchday 30. In addition to the four relegated teams per season, the three group-twelfth players then had to contest the three best third division playoffs (barrages) to stay up. Of the six newcomers to Division 2 , four were immediately relegated, while the footballers from Mantes-la-Ville were the only ones able to place themselves on a secure position (6th in Group B).

In the 720 encounters 1,936 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.69 goals per game. The most successful strikers in Group A were Gérard Pleimelding (Troyes, 20), in Group B Joseph Yegba Maya (Valenciennes, 28 - that was almost 60% of all hits by his team) and in Group C Marc Molitor (Strasbourg, 40), who so that the league was the overall top scorer. For the 1972/73 season three relegated from Division 1 were added; No team rose directly from the third-highest division, because all the second division players involved prevailed in the relegation games against the lower-class teams ( CA Lisieux , AS Strasbourg and ES Juvisy ), with Poitiers even losing to Lisieux, but the third division team then renounced promotion . Subsequently, however, the football association transferred Montpellier and Quevilly to the third division for financial reasons. The teams from Cambrai and Bagneaux-Fontainebleau-Nemours, who had already been relegated to the sport, benefited from this.
