The Gazélec Football Club Ajaccio (or Gazélec or GFCA for short ) is a French football club from Ajaccio , the capital of the French department Corse-du-Sud on the island of Corsica .

It was founded in 1910 as Jeunesse Sportive Ajaccienne . After several mergers, it was called FC Ajaccio from 1933 , Gazélec Football Club d'Ajaccio from 1960 and Gazélec Football Club Olympique Ajaccio from 1996 , before adopting its current name in 2012. The name "Gazélec" comes from France's large, formerly state-owned energy company Électricité de France - Gaz de France (EDF-GDF), which has supported the club for half a century. The club colors are red and blue; the league team plays at the Stade Ange Casanova (until 1994: Stade Mezzavia ), which has a capacity of 6000 seats.

The club's president is François Tagliaglioli; the first team has been coached by Jean-Luc Vannuchi since 2016.

League affiliation

Gazélec has only had professional status since his promotion to Ligue 2 in 2012. In the past, although requested, he was denied the club by the football association because it represented the principle of “one city, one professional club” for a very long time to prevent something similar many clubs have to file for bankruptcy as they did in the 1980s and 1990s - and Ajaccio already has the ACA . As a result, before 2015, when the GFCA managed to " march " out of the third division within two seasons, the GFCA never played first class ( Division 1 , renamed Ligue 1 since 2002 ). In the 2018/19 season, the club was relegated from Ligue 2.
