The Division 2 1972-73 was the 34th of the second highest French football league . It was an open championship with professional and amateur clubs. Racing Lens became second division champions .
societies
Eligible were the 33 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season ; there were also three first division relegated teams, but no previous amateur third division team. These 36 participants played in two groups, mainly divided according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- Group A: US Dunkerque , US Grand Boulogne , relegated OSC Lille , Racing Lens , AC Cambrai , SC Amiens , FC Rouen , CA Mantes , SM Caen , Stade Laval , US Le Mans , Stade Brest , FC Lorient , AAJ Blois , FC Bourges , LB Châteauroux , Stade Poitiers PEP , relegated AS Angoulême
- Group B: Troyes Aube Football , EAC Chaumont , Entente Bagneaux-Fontainebleau-Nemours , FC Mulhouse , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon , EDS Montluçon , CS Cuiseaux-Louhans , FC Gueugnon , FC Limoges , US Toulouse , FC Sète , US Montélimar , Olympique Avignon , AC Arles , SC Toulon , ESCN La Ciotat , AS Cannes , relegated AS Monaco
The respective group winners and the winner of the play-offs between the two runners- up were eligible for promotion . This time, there was no relegation between the worst-placed first division clubs who were not directly relegated and the best second division clubs who were not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference and, if this was also identical - as in this season at Poitiers and Angoulême - the larger number of hits made the decisive factors for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
In both seasons there was an exciting head-to-head race for first place. In Group B, this was a duel between Troyes and Monaco, who had broken away from the field of pursuers early, fought for the best position until the end and finally - Monaco thanks to the play-offs - both made the promotion. In Group A, there were even four teams that had a chance of first place until the penultimate matchday. In the end, it was only the goal difference that tipped the balance in favor of Lens against Boulogne, and Lille was only one point behind these two competitors, even having the significantly better goal difference against Boulogne. At the bottom of the table, the three relegated teams in Group A and two in Group B were determined before the last match day; After the end of the season, however, things turned out differently, as with the withdrawal of FC Limoges from Division 2, the third from bottom of the northwest relay, Châteauroux, still remained in the league.
1,660 hits were scored in the 612 matches; this corresponds to an average of 2.71 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers in Group A were Eugeniusz Faber (Lens) with 21 and in Group B Gérard Tonnel (Troyes) with 31 goals; The latter won the league top scorer's crown. The following season came three relegated from Division 1 ( US Valenciennes-Anzin , Red Star FC and AC Ajaccio ); six teams rose directly from the third highest division, namely SC Hazebrouck , Paris Saint-Germain FC , ES La Rochelle , JGA Nevers , CS Vittel and AS Béziers .
