Vahid Halilhodžić (born October 15, 1952 in Jablanica , SFR Yugoslavia , today Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a former Yugoslav football player and current coach . He is considered one of the most successful Bosnian coaches.

Player career

Vahid Halilhodžić began his professional career in 1968 at Turbina Jablanica , where he played for three years. This was followed by a move to Velež Mostar . There he became known as a top striker. In 10 years he played 209 games and scored 106 goals. He also won the Yugoslav Cup. In 1981 he moved to the French club FC Nantes . There he was just as accurate as before at Velež Mostar. At Nantes, he played 163 games and scored 93 goals. In the end he was top scorer twice (1983 and 1985) and won Ligue 1 in 1983. From 1986 to 1987 he played for Paris Saint-Germain , where he played only 18 games, but scored eight goals.

National team

Between 1976 and 1982 Halilhodžić completed 15 games for the Yugoslav national football team and scored 8 goals. He took part in the 1982 World Cup and came to two missions.

Coaching career

He began his coaching career in 1990 at Velež Mostar , where he first became known as a striker. He stayed there until 1992, when he moved to the French club AS Beauvais in 1993 , where he only stayed for a year. He did not continue as a coach until 1997 at the Moroccan club Raja de Casablanca , where he was one of the most successful. In just one year he won the African Supercup in 1997 and the championship in Morocco in 1997 and 1998. From 1998 he coached three different French clubs, namely the OSC Lille from 1998 to 2002, Stade Rennes from 2002 to 2003 and finally at Paris Saint- Germain from 2003 to 2005. With Lille OSC, he rose to Ligue 1 in 2000 and was named French coach of the year a year later . With Paris he won the Coupe de France in 2004 and was runner-up in Ligue 1. From 2005 to 2006 he coached the Turkish club Trabzonspor , then went to Al-Ittihad in Arabia . He stayed there until 2008. Then he became the coach of the Ivory Coast and made sure that they qualified for the 2010 World Cup. But suddenly he was fired on February 27, 2010, despite having lost only one game in two years.

After Velimir Zajec's dismissal , he took over the post of coach at Dinamo Zagreb . After winning the Croatian double with Dinamo , he accepted the Algerian Football Association's offer to work as the national coach of the Algerian national team from July 1, 2011 . He took the North Africans to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup . There the first-time achievement of the World Cup round of 16 was celebrated. Nevertheless, Halilhodžić decided after leaving against Germany not to extend his contract with the Algerian Football Association . He then took over the coaching position at the Turkish first division club Trabzonspor .

Halilhodžić was sacked before the 9th match day on November 8, 2014 at Trabzonspor.

In March 2015 he was named national coach of the Japanese national soccer team .

In 2017 he qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In April 2018, the Japanese Football Association announced the separation from Halilhodžić. Unsatisfactory results from previous games and his authoritarian leadership style are said to be the reason for the dismissal.

From October 2018 to August 2019, Halilhodžić coached the French first division club FC Nantes .
