Velimir Zajec (born October 12, 1956 in Zagreb ) is a former football player and coach.

Player career

Velimir Zajec began his professional career in 1974 at the age of 18 at Dinamo Zagreb . With Dinamo, Zajec won the Yugoslav Championship in 1982, the first for the club after 24 years, and twice the cup (1980, 1983) and 1977 the Balkan Cup. In 1984 Zajec moved to the traditional Greek club Panathinaikos Athens . This transfer caused a sensation, especially since Zajec was promoted to captain of the Yugoslav national football team at this point and top European clubs from Spain and Italy were interested in signing the Libero . At Panathinaikos, Zajec won a Greek championship (1986) and twice the cup (1986, 1988), came to over 100 first division appearances and finally ended his playing career in 1988.

With the Yugoslav national team, Velimir Zajec took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain and the 1984 European Championships in France and came to a total of 40 missions.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Zajec took over the post of sports director at his former club Dinamo Zagreb from 1989 to 1991. After moving to Panathinaikos, Zajec was appointed head of the youth academy. In the 1996/1997 season, he first took over as a coach in Athens and finally, after a brief return as a coach to Dinamo, from 2002 onwards he was the club's sports director. In 2004 he moved to the English first division club Portsmouth FC where he stayed until October 10, 2005.

In July 2010 he returned to Dinamo Zagreb as a coach . After failing to qualify for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League against Sheriff Tiraspol , he was sacked.
