Chilanga is a city in Zambia . It is 14 kilometers south of Lusaka on the road and railway line to Kafue . It is in fact a suburb of the capital. It has 11,412 inhabitants and is located in the province of Lusaka . It is characterized by the largest cement factory in the country, Chilanga Cement PLC., Which has been privatized since 1994, first by Commonwealth Development Corporation, then by the French concrete company Lefarge in Paris in conjunction with Mbeya Cement in Tanzania and Portland Cement in Malawi . In 2005, Chilanga Cement exported 143,000 tons. The company operates another cement production facility in Ndola . Another cement factory in Lusaka is due to start operations in 2008. The factory sources gypsum as a waste product from copper refining. The considerable gypsum clay deposits 38 kilometers from Monze remain undeveloped.
