Mbeya is one of the ten largest cities in Tanzania . According to a 2012 census, 385,279 people live in the city. The city is also the administrative center of the Mbeya region of the same name and forms an economic center in the west of the country. The demarcation between city and region is difficult in practice, however, since the densely populated core area extends beyond the city limits. The last census from 2012 counted around 2.7 million inhabitants for the entire region.

Geopolitical data

Mbeya is the capital of the Mbeya administrative district in the southern highlands of Tanzania . The city is located about 850 kilometers by road from the largest city in Tanzania, Dar es Salaam .

The city is located in the valley at the foot of the Mbeya Range at an altitude of 1600 to 1900 meters. The highest mountain in the Mbeya range is Mount Mbeya of the same name at 2818 m. The other side of the valley is formed by the Poroto Mountains with Mount Rungwe, 2960 m high .

The city of Mbeya was only founded in 1927 from a few villages at the foot of Mount Mbeya. Almost 280,000 people live in Mbeya today. Another 300,000 live in the city's extensive suburbs.

Population development

The population is growing very quickly. From 2002 to 2012 it grew at an annual rate of 4.75%.

The following overview shows the number of inhabitants by area since the 1978 census.

        year         population
1978 (census) 76,601
1988 (census) 130,798
2002 (census) 232,596
2012 (census) 385.279

Infrastructure

Mbeya is a stop on the TAZARA railway line and is located on the developed Tanzam Highway , an internationally important connection road between Dar es Salaam ( Dar es Salaam port ) on the one hand and Zambia and Malawi on the other. The Tanzam Highway is mainly used for freight traffic to and from Zambia and Malawi, but also increasingly to Mozambique and South Africa in recent years .

The airport, which is located in the city, has been closed to scheduled aircraft for several years and is now only served by smaller charter aircraft. In December 2012, the new Songwe International Airport opened 20 km west of the city. The airport was first served by Precision Air on January 16, 2013 .

The city's hospital has 450 beds and is responsible for supplying the entire region. As in many African hospitals, the equipment and number of medical staff is insufficient. The "Mbeya Institute of Science and Technology" ( MIST ), a technical university in the city, is also a central point of contact in the region. In the winter semester of 2009 around 1,100 students studied engineering and natural sciences there.
