The FK Velež Mostar is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Club in Mostar . He currently plays in the country's top division, the Premijer Liga .
history
The association from Herzegovina was founded in 1922 as a workers' club and was a symbol of the city and of the solidarity between the peoples living there. It is named after the Velež ridge towering over the town in the east . The city rival Zrinjski Mostar , dominated by Croatian fans, was banned from any work in 1945, as were all cultural and sports clubs with national symbols. Velež rose in 1953 to the 1st Yugoslav League . The club's greatest successes were winning the Yugoslav Cup in 1981 and 1986. The club also took part in European competitions, but only made it to the quarter-finals.
When the Bosnian War broke out, the club's development came to a standstill. After the war, Velež initially played in the lower leagues. The worst thing for the fans, players and officials was that they were no longer allowed to play in the home stadium Bijeli Brijeg on the west side of the city because the Croatian sports club Zrinjski has claimed the stadium for themselves since the war. Velež then had to move to the “Vrapčići” stadium, located in the suburb of Mostar of the same name.
2006 succeeded Velež the renewed promotion to the Premijer Liga . After ten years, relegation to the second division followed at the end of the 2015/16 season . In 2019 Velež returned to the Premijer Liga as champions of the second division.

Fans
There is a rivalry between the fans of HŠK Zrinjski Mostar , who are mostly Croatians , and those of the Bosniak- dominated FK Velež Mostar. The meeting of these two teams is also known as the Mostar Derby . In the past there have been riots between fans of Bosniak and Croatian origin in Mostar . This was partly carried over to the national teams. There were riots at the European Football Championship in 2008 , when Croatia played against Turkey.
