Richard John Keogh (born August 11, 1986 in Harlow ) is an Irish football player who has been under contract with the English second division Derby County since 2012 .

Career

First stations

Richard Keogh, who came from the Stoke City Youth Academy , joined Bristol City on July 19, 2005 on a free transfer . On September 3, 2005, he made his debut in Football League One 2005/06 in a 0-0 win against Colchester United. In the following season he played 31 league games and achieved promotion to the second division with Bristol as runners-up in Football League One 2006/07 . The 2007/08 season spent the 21-year-old defender on loan at the third division Huddersfield Town , Carlisle United and Cheltenham Town .

Carlisle United and Coventry City

On August 20, 2008, Keogh returned on a permanent contract basis to Carlisle United . In Carlisle he established himself as a regular player in central defense and spent two seasons in the relegation battle of Football League One . In the summer of 2010, Keogh decided against a contract extension and moved to the second division Coventry City . In the Football League Championship 2010/11 he played all 46 league games and ended the season with Coventry in the lower third of the table. A year later , the club rose as penultimate in the third division.

Derby County

After Coventry had previously turned down offers from Bristol City and Cardiff City, Richard Keogh moved to Derby County on July 19, 2012 and signed a three-year deal. Just one day later, he was named team captain by coach Nigel Clough .

National team

Richard Keogh played his first international game on February 6, 2013, when the Irish national team beat Poland 2-0 when he was substituted on shortly before the end. In his second game against Georgia four months later, he not only played for the entire season, he also contributed his first international goal to the 4-0 success. In the 2012/13 World Cup qualification, however, he was not used and only sat on the bench once.

After that, however, he was used more and more often and in November 2014 he played his first competitive match against Scotland in qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship . He played the last two group games and the two successful relegation games against Bosnia-Herzegovina as a regular player in central defense and was then accepted into Ireland 's EM squad . In the first two games he only sat on the bench, but after the 3-0 defeat against Belgium the defense was changed and he played the next two games over 90 minutes each. In the round of 16, the team then failed 2-1 to hosts France.
