To Dun (Clashnessie)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The An Dun near Clashnessie is a small dun , also known as a "Promontory Dun" - a Bronze Age complex made of dry stone . It is located on the west bank of Clashnessie Bay near Clashnessie in the district of Assynt , on a north-south oriented geological outcrop , ten meters above sea level, in Sutherland in Scotland .

description

There are narrow vertical clefts to the north and south of the outcrop. A narrow, low-lying rock neck connects the outcrop at the side with the mainland. In the north part of the rock face has detached from the outcrop. During storms from the north, the digestion becomes a tidal island ( English Tidal Iceland ).

The earliest documented mention of Clashnessie Dun comes from Roy's Assynt map (around 1750), which shows it to be inhabited. Roy did not mark any of the other Promontory Duns or the Brochs in Assynt. There are signs of a dam between the coast and the southwest corner of the outcrop. The dun itself is only partially preserved and it is difficult to reconstruct the various structures, including those in front. The dating took place in the Scottish Bronze Age (2400–550 BC)

A 200 m long and between 60 and 90 m wide area of the mainland next to the dun is a little higher than the outcrop on which the dun stands. Below is a swampy area between 70 and 100 m wide. There is a small bay at both ends. The fragmentary remains of various field boundaries can be seen in this area. It is possible that the area of the hill was an integral part of the dun and that the walls are remnants of an outer structure.
