Ikechi Anya (born January 3, 1988 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish football player of Nigerian and Romanian descent.
Career
youth
Ikeci Anya was born the son of a Nigerian scientist and a Romanian economist. The couple met in Bucharest and moved to Glasgow , Scotland , where Anya was born on January 3, 1988. Originally, like his brother, he was meant to pursue an academic career, but he was already interested in football when he was still at school. Even after moving to Oxford , where his father had a new job, he remained a fan of the Glasgow Rangers and the Scottish national team.
society
He started his football career as a youth player with the English football club Oxford United , from where he moved to the Wycombe Wanderers . There he became the youngest football player under coach Tony Adams at the age of 16 . Paul Lambert fired him from the team in 2007. After a few unsuccessful years at Oxford City and Halesowen Town, he played from 2009 for Northampton Town in Football League One . From there he moved to the Spanish club Sevilla Atlético . After two years he moved to the reserve team and then to the Celta Vigo senior team . In 2011 he moved to Granada CF , but was loaned to the two clubs Cádiz FC and Watford FC . Anya has been under contract for Watford FC since July 2013.
National team
Due to his family background, Anya would also have a right to play in the Nigerian national soccer team . However, he declined an offer in this regard. It would also have been possible to play in the English or Romanian national team . Instead, however, he opted for the Scottish national team. This appointed him on August 23, 2013 for the World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Belgium . He scored his first goal on September 10, 2013 against Macedonia. However, Scotland failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup .
Anya scored the 1-1 equalizer in the 2-1 defeat against Germany on September 7, 2014 in the qualifier for the European Championship 2016 .
