Martyn Thomas Waghorn (born January 23, 1990 in South Shields ) is an English football player . The forward is under contract with Derby County .

Career

Martyn Waghorn was born in the port city of South Shields . He began his career in the vicinity of his birthplace at Sunderland AFC . Until 2007 he played in the youth of the club. On December 26, 2007, the 17-year-old Waghorn made his debut in the professional Blackcats team in a 4-0 home loss to Manchester United . By the end of the 2007/08 season he completed two more games in the Premier League under Roy Keane . In the following season 2008/09 Waghorn played once for Sunderland against Chelsea on November 1, 2008. Two weeks later he was awarded for a month to the English second division club Charlton Athletic . One day before the loan ended, Waghorn scored his first professional goal in a 2-2 draw against Derby County . The loan was then extended to January 17, 2009. On August 6, Waghorn was awarded to the English second division team Leicester City for the entire 2009/10 season . In Leicester he completed 43 of a possible 46 league games and was the team's top scorer with 12 goals in front of Matty Fryatt , Andy King and Paul Gallagher . At the beginning of the 2010/11 season Waghorn first returned to Sunderland, and completed two league games under Steve Bruce . On August 31, 2010 Waghorn moved to Leicester for a fee of three million pounds after Sunderland was able to sign Asamoah Gyan as a replacement . In his first season as an integral part of the team, Waghorn was successful as a goalscorer four times in 30 league games. From September to November 2011 he played on loan at Hull City . In Leicester, eer could not fight for a regular place so that he was awarded a second time from September to December 2013, this time to Millwall FC . In January 2014 Waghorn moved to Wigan Athletic . In July 2015 Waghorn moved with James Tavernier from Wigan to Scotland to the Glasgow Rangers and signed a three-year contract. He made his debut for the Rangers five days after signing in the 1st round of the Challenge Cup against Hibernian Edinburgh , scoring two goals. On September 27, Waghorn scored the first hat trick of his career against Greenock Morton . By February 16, 2016 Waghorn had scored 20 goals in 25 league games, making a significant contribution to the second division championship . He was alongside James Tavernier, Kenny Miller and Jason Holt one of four Rangers players who scored at least double digits. Waghorn was the top scorer with his twenty goals scored. Waghorn injured his knee on February 16 and was out for the rest of the season.

Waghorn moved to Ipswich Town in August 2017 .

National team

Martyn Waghorn played twice for the English U-19s against Spain and Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2009 . In 2011 and 2012 he played a total of five times in the English U-21s and scored two goals.
