Andrew Philip "Andy" King (born October 29, 1988 in Maidenhead ) is a Welsh national football player who has worked for the English first division club Leicester City since 2007 , with whom he became English champion in 2016.

Club career

Leicester City

Andy King, who has been with Leicester City since he was 16 , started his playing career on October 2, 2007 in a home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2007/08 Football League Championship . In the team coached by Ian Holloway , he completed eleven league games and scored one goal. Leicester finished third from last at the end of the season and relegated to the third-rate Football League One . Under the new coach Nigel Pearson , the club around regular Andy King (45 games / 9 goals) and top scorer Matty Fryatt (27 league goals) had an excellent season the following year. Leicester secured the third division championship before Peterborough United and returned to the Football League Championship after a year .

Also in the 2009/10 season , the newcomer managed to preserve his good performance. City reached the play-off semi-finals against fourth Cardiff City through a fifth place in the table . After a 0: 1 home defeat and a 3: 2 away win, Andy King's team (43 games / 9 goals) failed on penalties and missed the finals against Blackpool FC . In the 2010/11 season , the club started under the new coach Paulo Sousa much worse than expected. This led to the separation from the Portuguese on September 30, 2010. Under his successor Sven-Göran Eriksson , Leicester found its way back on the road to success, thanks to reinforcements such as Jeffrey Bruma , Patrick van Aanholt and Yakubu Aiyegbeni , before worse results came back towards the end of the season. The team only reached tenth place and clearly missed the renewed play-off entry. Andy King (45 games / 15 goals), who has been team captain since March 2011, played an excellent season and was elected to the PFA Team of the Year in the English second division together with his teammate Kyle Naughton . 2013/14 he was with Leicester second division champions and rose to the Premier League . After the club landed in 14th place in 2015 , they surprisingly became champions in 2016 under the new coach Claudio Ranieri .

On August 15, 2019, King was loaned to the Glasgow Rangers in Scotland for one season .

Welsh national team

Due to his Welsh grandfather, England-born Andy King was eligible to play for the Welsh national football team . After games for the U-19 and U-21 selection teams, with which he had participated in the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship 2011 and only failed in direct comparison to Italy due to the away goals rule , he celebrated on 22. May 2009 in a friendly against Estonia made his debut for the senior team when he came on in the 89th minute. After four games without a stake, in which he only sat on the bench once, he made a ten-minute short stint on October 14, 2009 in the last qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup against Liechtenstein after the goal to make it 2-0 . But the Welsh had no chance to qualify for the World Cup. A month later he had another short ten-minute bet in the 3-0 friendly against Scotland .

His first goal for Wales came in his fourth game on August 11, 2010 in a friendly against Luxembourg after being substituted on for the second half this time. After only being substituted on before, he was in the starting line-up for the first time on October 12, 2010 in a 4-1 draw against Switzerland in the Euro 2012 qualifier . He played over 90 minutes, but received a yellow card after a serious foul in the seventh minute - one minute later the 1-0 for Switzerland fell. All in all, he only made four appearances in the European Championship qualification and the Welsh failed as fourth.

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , in which the Welsh was only fifth, he was used in eight out of ten games. But he only played in the last two games, when the Welsh had no chance to qualify, over 90 minutes each. Things went better for Wales in qualifying for Euro 2016 . However, he only made six appearances in the first successful EM qualification. He had to take a break twice, because on October 13, 2014, he received a red card from the German referee Manuel Gräfe in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Cyprus two minutes after the half-time break . His teammates were able to bring the game, which was 2-1 for the Welsh at the time, but outnumbered over time.

After missing two test matches in March 2016 due to an injury, he was accepted into the Welsh squad for the 2016 European Football Championship in France after recovering from a muscle injury . He got his first use in the third group game against the Russian selection when he was substituted on for Joe Ledley in a 3-0 lead in the 76th minute . He came into the game for the second time in the quarter-finals when they had to bring a 2-1 advantage over Belgium through the final quarter of an hour. His team scored 3-1 and made it to the semi-finals. There he moved into the starting line-up against Portugal for Aaron Ramsey , who was suspended from yellow . The game was lost 2-0 and the team was eliminated.
