Karlan Laughton Ahearne-Grant (born September 18, 1997 in Greenwich ) is an English football player of Scottish descent who is under contract with the second division club Huddersfield Town . The striker is a former England junior international.

Club career

Charlton Athletic

Greenwich-born Karlan Grant comes from the youth division of Charlton Athletic and was the top scorer for the U18 team in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons. On September 23, 2014, shortly after his 17th birthday, he signed his first professional three-year contract. Seven days later, the striker made his first-team debut in a 1-0 away win over Norwich City when he came on for Frédéric Bulot in the 89th minute . In the next league games, he made another four appearances, but did not play a single league game in the remaining 2014/15 season .

He was used regularly in the next 2015/16 season . He scored his first goal in professional football on August 11, 2015 in a 4-1 league victory over Dagenham & Redbridge . On September 26, 2015 (9th matchday), he scored his first goal in the second-highest English division in the 1: 2 away defeat against Cardiff City . He kept his place as a rotation player until the turn of the year and on January 16, 2016, Grant moved to fourth division Cambridge United on loan for a month . There he was used in three out of five possible league games, remained without a goal participation and finally returned to the Londoners after loan end . There he was no longer considered by the new head coach José Riga for the rest of the season. He came this season to 17 league appearances for the Addicks , in which he scored a goal and rose with the team in the third-rate Football League One .

Even one league under the championship did not make his breakthrough and he only played eight league games in the 2016/17 season . In the next season 2017/18 he managed to jump into the rotation again and he was on the field in almost every league game in the first half of the season. On January 30, 2018, he moved to fourth division Crawley Town in a loan deal for the remainder of the 2017/18 season . Four days later he was already in the starting line-up for the away game against Chesterfield FC and scored his first goal in the 2-1 win. He made his breakthrough in the jersey of the Reds from southern England and established himself as an important regular player. In the 2-2 draw against Carlisle United on March 17 (38th matchday), he managed the first brace of his professional career. He scored nine goals in 15 league games for Crawley Town and returned to Charlton Athletic at the end of the season.

In mid-June 2018, Karlan Grant hit the headlines outside of football when he was arrested in Ibiza , where he was vacationing with teammate Reeco Hackett-Fairchild and a friend. Grant was charged with invading privacy while Hackett-Fairchild was charged with sexually assaulting a 19 year old woman. While Grant was immediately released and allowed to leave the country, his teammate was not allowed to leave until mid-July. There was no trial later. The player, previously known as Karlan Ahearne-Grant, has only been known as Karlan Grant since summer 2018.

Despite the turbulent summer, Grant also made the breakthrough at Charlton Athletic in the 2018/19 season . On the second game day he scored the decisive goal for the 2-1 home win against Shrewsbury Town in the 91st minute of the game . He also performed well in the next league games and established himself alongside Lyle Taylor and Nicky Ajose as a regular player in the Addicks ' storm triangle , who fought for a return to the second division this season. By his move in late January 2019, he had scored 14 goals in 28 league games and prepared five more goals.

Huddersfield Town

On January 30, 2019, Karlan Grant moved to the first division club Huddersfield Town for a transfer fee of two million pounds , where he signed a 3-1 / 2-year contract. The West Yorkshire club hoped that Grant would provide immediate help in the fight against relegation, and Grant made his debut three days later in the 5-0 away defeat by Chelsea when he replaced Philip Billing in the 67th minute . In the next league game against Arsenal on February 9, 2019 (26th matchday), he was exchanged in the final phase and scored the goal of the 2-1 defeat with the final whistle. In the next time he established himself as a regular player for the Terriers . On March 16, 2019 (31st matchday), he scored twice in the 3: 4 away defeat against West Ham United . In this 2018/19 season he played 13 league games in which he scored four goals and Huddersfield's relegation to the EFL Championship was already fixed at the end of March 2019.

The next 2019/20 season started poorly for Huddersfield, as only two points could be collected in the first nine league games. Grant scored five goals in these games, however, and he maintained his goal rate in the next league games, but Huddersfield was in a relegation battle until the forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

National team

In spring 2014, Karlan Grant played three international matches for the England U17 national team . From November 2014 to June 2015 he worked four times for the U18s .

Due to his mother from Scotland , Grant is also eligible to play for the Scottish national team.
