Steve Michel Mounié (born September 29, 1994 in Parakou ) is a Beninese football player who has been under contract with the English second division club Huddersfield Town since July 2017 . The striker joined the Beninese international in October 2015 .

Career

society

Born in Parakou , Benin, Mounié came to France in 1998, where the family settled in Perpignan . There he started playing soccer for the local Perpignan Football Catalan in September 2000 , where he played for two years. He then worked for the youth teams of three other soccer clubs in the city for nine years before enrolling in the youth team at HSC Montpellier at the age of 14 . There he played five seasons in various junior teams, but gained his first experience in the 2012/13 season in the reserve team HSC Montpellier II, which played in the five-class Championnat National 5 and later also Championnat National 2 .

He signed his first professional contract on June 3, 2014. On October 28, 2014 Mounié made his debut in the 0-1 cup defeat against AC Ajaccio in the first team when he came on as a substitute for Jean Deza in the closing stages . In this 2014/15 season he was not used in any other competitive game for the men's team, but was on the field for the reserve in 21 league games in which he scored six goals. On August 8, 2015 (1st matchday) Steve Mounié completed his debut in the top French division in the 2-0 home defeat against SCO Angers , when he replaced the experienced Souleymane Camara in the 58th minute of the game .

Despite two appearances in the first team at the start of the season, Mounié was loaned to the second division Olympique Nîmes on August 31, 2015 for the entire 2015/16 season. There he made his debut on September 11, 2015 (6th matchday) in a 0-0 draw against AC Ajaccio when he came on for Florian Fabre in the 64th minute of the game . On September 25 (9th matchday) he scored his first goal for the Crocodiles in a 2-1 away win against FC Metz . The striker quickly established himself in the starting line-up and became one of the team's top scorers. He scored eleven goals in 32 league games and prepared five more goals and returned to Montpellier at the end of the season.

On June 29, 2016, Mounié extended his contract with Montpellier until the summer of 2019. He also developed as a regular at La Paillade in this 2016/17 season. On the 2nd match day (August 21, 2016) he scored his first goal of the season in a 3-1 away defeat against AS Saint-Étienne . He scored 14 goals in 35 league games and prepared three goals and was one of the team's most important players in the relegation battle.

On July 5, 2017, Steve Mounié moved to the Premier League promoted Huddersfield Town for a club-internal record transfer fee of 13 million euros , where he signed a four-year contract. He played his first league game on August 12, 2017 (1st matchday) in a 3-0 home win against Crystal Palace and started his career on the island with two goals in this game. Despite this excellent start, Mounié did not represent the necessary reinforcement for the relegation team of head coach David Wagner in the next league games and only ended his goal downturn since the debut game with two goals on matchday 16. He scored seven goals in 28 league games in his first season 2017/18 and was able to successfully keep the class with the club.

In the first half of the following season 2018/19 he could not score a single goal in the entire first half of the season and found himself with the Terriers on the last place in the table. In addition, he followed on December 1, 2018 (14th matchday) in the 1: 2 home defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion after a serious foul against Brighton's Yves Bissouma with " smooth red " and was suspended for three games. It was only on January 2, 2019 (21st match day) that he scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 home defeat against Burnley FC . In the remaining season, however, only one more followed and Huddersfield Town was already relegated at the end of March 2019, earlier in a season only Derby County had caught it in the 2007/08 season .

After he was only a substitute at the beginning of the next 2019/20 season and had no scoring , he returned to the starting line-up in December 2019 under the new head coach Danny Cowley . As a result, he got some important goals for Huddersfield, which was again in the relegation battle. Until the forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic , he had scored eight goals in 23 league games and prepared another goal. In seven league appearances after the restart, he failed to hit any more.

National team

Mounié made his debut on October 13, 2015 in a 1: 2 friendly defeat against the Republic of the Congo in the Beninese national team . He scored his first international goal on March 23, 2016 in a 2-1 away win against South Sudan in qualifying for the 2017 Africa Cup . On June 18, 2019, he managed a hat trick in a friendly international match against Mauritania .

After successfully qualifying, he took part in the selection at the 2019 Africa Cup in Egypt , where he was used in four games and was eliminated with the team in the quarter-finals against the eventual finalists Senegal .
