Football World Cup 2014 / Cameroon
This article covers the Cameroon national football team at the 2014 World Cup . Cameroon took part in the finals for the seventh time and in a finals in South America for the first time . No African team took part more often.
qualification
Cameroon qualified through the CAF qualification . In the group stage of the 2nd round, the team met Libya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Togo. All home games were played in the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in the capital Yaoundé . Cameroon began qualifying under French coach Denis Lavagne , who was sacked after losing in the second game. In the third game, the team was coached by interim coach Jean-Paul Akono . Then Volker Finke took over the coaching position, under which the group victory and thus the entry into the playoff round was made perfect. The decision was made on the last day of the match in a direct encounter with Libya. Because of the victory against Libya, it was no longer relevant that FIFA converted the defeat against Togo on June 9 into a victory for Cameroon. Of all the qualified African teams, Cameroon scored the fewest goals in the group stage - not counting the 3 goals that were awarded to them at the green table.

Cameroon had never played in Brazil before the World Cup.
Already after the 0: 4 against the Croatian team, Cameroon no longer had a chance to reach the knockout round.
Sports impact
In the FIFA world rankings , Cameroon climbed three places from 56th to 53rd place despite the three defeats in the preliminary round and the associated loss of points (-38 points), which is mainly due to the fact that previously better-placed teams did not play and points from previous years lost.
Alex Song was suspended for three games due to being sent off in the second group game. Since Cameroon was eliminated, the remaining two game suspensions had to be served in the next official international matches. After he was not considered for the Africa Cup in 2015, he resigned from the national team.
Resignations
On August 27, Samuel Eto'o announced his resignation from the national team.
