Club career

Beginnings

Matip began his career in 1994 with the Bochum club SC Weitmar 45. There he was active for three years. From 1997 to 2000 he played for the youth teams of VfL Bochum before moving to the youth department of FC Schalke 04 .

With the B youth team of FC Schalke, he won the Westphalia Cup in 2008.

On October 17, 2009 Matip completed his first appearance for the second team in the game against 1. FC Saarbrücken on the starting line-up. Three weeks later he made his debut in the first team of FC Schalke 04 in the game against FC Bayern Munich on the starting line-up and scored his first Bundesliga goal after 43 minutes with the goal to make it 1-1. In the course of the 2009/10 season , despite his young age and great competition, he came on 20 missions, scoring three goals.

On March 2, 2010, Matip signed a professional contract with FC Schalke 04 that ran until June 30, 2013 and was extended to 2016 in January 2012.

After the departure of long-time captain Marcelo Bordon and Heiko Westermanns for the 2010/11 season, Matip increasingly established himself as a regular in central defense alongside Benedikt Höwedes . Despite the commitment of the experienced former German national player Christoph Metzelder , he continued to play regularly. In the Champions League , Schalke reached the semi-finals for the first time in the club's history. A highlight of the season was winning the 2010/11 DFB Cup , when they won 5-0 in the final against second division club MSV Duisburg .

For the 2011/12 season , Matip was not always undisputed. He was often criticized for his risky style of play and repeatedly whistled by the fans during Schalke home games. He finally managed to improve his performance and was a regular member of the Schalke team. At the end of the season there were three goals and four assists in the league. For the first time Matip played in the UEFA Europa League and this season scored one goal and prepared another. In the round of 16 against Twente Enschede , Matip was sent off in the 60th minute. After protests by the association, the ban was canceled.

The 2012/13 season was marked by great inconsistency not only for Matip, but also for the entire team. After a very strong start to the first half of the season, the team got weaker and weaker towards the winter break. The low point was the dismissal of the coach Huub Stevens and the conclusion of the first half of the season in seventh place in the table. Nevertheless, the team was able to qualify as group winners for the round of 16 in the Champions League . At the end of the season they reached fourth place in the table.

For the 2013/14 season he was considered set in central defense. He took turns playing alongside Felipe Santana and Höwedes. In the first half of the season he scored two goals: one against 1899 Hoffenheim , the other against Eintracht Frankfurt ; both games ended 3: 3. In the entire first half of the season, Matip received only three yellow cards across all competitions . He scored a goal against FC Basel in the 2013/14 Champions League , which meant that the team qualified for the knockout phase of the competition. At the beginning of the second half of the season he showed, like the entire team, an increase in performance and only just missed the setting of the club's internal second half of the start record.

The first half of the 2014/15 season was mainly characterized by injuries for Matip. First he suffered an adductor injury. On the sixth matchday he contributed with a goal to the derby win against Borussia Dortmund . He missed three league games because of a bruised foot. During his comeback against VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 12, he suffered a broken foot, so that he was out for the rest of the first half of the season and also for the 2015 Africa Cup . On matchday 18, he made his comeback in a 1-0 home win on January 31, 2015 against Hannover 96 , when he came on for Max Meyer shortly before the end of the game . There followed three games over the full playing time before he suffered a hamstring muscle tear on matchday 22 against Werder Bremen. He missed the following derby against Dortmund. Of the remaining eleven games in the second half of the season, he played ten and scored one goal. Across all competitions, he missed 15 games due to injuries.

In the season 2015/16 strongly launched Matip. After advancing in the DFB Cup , he prepared two goals on the first day of the Bundesliga in a 3-0 win against Werder Bremen. On the fourth match day, Matip advanced to the match winner with one goal and one assist in a 2-1 win against FSV Mainz 05 . Matip was used in all 17 Bundesliga games in the first half of the season. He was also a regular at the beginning of the second half of the season. He did not extend his contract, which was running out at the end of the season. Instead, he moved to Liverpool under the direction of Jürgen Klopp .

Matip made his debut for Liverpool on the third day of the Premier League 2016/17 against Tottenham Hotspur and has been part of the team ever since. Matip played 29 of a possible 38 league games in his first season for Liverpool FC. He missed seven games due to an ankle injury. With three yellow cards, Matip usually acted fairly fairly in the Premier League, which is known for its tough style of play. At the end of the season, the team reached fourth place in the table. At the end of the 2018/2019 season, he won the Champions League final with the LFC in Madrid 2-0 against Tottenham Hotspur.

In mid-October 2019, Matip prematurely extended his contract in Liverpool.

National team

On December 23, 2009, Matip was appointed to the 2010 African Cup of Nations squad by Cameroonian national coach Paul Le Guen . On January 6, 2010, Matip canceled to concentrate on the Bundesliga. He finally made his debut for the Cameroonian national team in a friendly against Italy on March 3, 2010. A few days later he declared his decision not to play for the DFB final.

On May 29, 2010, Matip was nominated by Le Guen for the squad of the Cameroonian national team for the 2010 World Cup . At the World Cup tournament he played a game against Japan (0: 1). The team was eliminated after three defeats in the group stage. Matip also took part in the 2014 World Cup and was used in two games. In the third group match against Brazil (1: 4) he scored his first international goal to make it 1: 1 and thus also the only goal of the Cameroonian national team during the World Cup finals in Brazil. Cameroon was eliminated again without a point.

Style of play

Matip mainly plays as a central defender, preferably on the left side within the back four. He can also play in defensive midfield as a six , where he was used especially at the beginning of his professional career and in the national team of Cameroon.

Already in his youth, Matip was awarded high qualities on the defensive as well as on the offensive; In addition, he is considered to be strong in headers and tackles. He gets by in the game without many fouls, as he is usually in front of the opponent on the ball due to high anticipation and good positional play paired with a solid basic speed. He has a trained technique and accuracy in passing. Manager Horst Heldt compared Matip with the Brazilian international Lúcio , who, despite his defensive position, also got into the offensive game of his team and caused danger. He is particularly dangerous in set pieces . On February 23, 2013, he scored two goals in a 2-1 home win against Fortuna Düsseldorf .
