The Heldt, who comes from the Rhenish Königswinter - Oberdollendorf , joined the FV Königswinter in 1975 ; In 1986 he moved to FV Bad Honnef before he was signed by 1. FC Köln in 1987 for their youth department. From 1988 Heldt belonged to the reserve of Cologne and in 1990 he played his first game for the professional team, for which he scored 13 goals in 144 games in the Bundesliga . With the team around Bodo Illgner and Henrik Andersen , the trained car mechanic reached the final of the DFB Cup in 1991 , which the team lost to Werder Bremen on penalties . He then played for four years for TSV 1860 Munich , for which he was on the field 111 times in the Bundesliga. In 1999 he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt . This club left Heldt after relegation in 2001 after Austria for SK Sturm Graz . In January 2003 he was brought to VfB Stuttgart by Felix Magath , where he was mainly used in attacking midfield. With over 350 Bundesliga games, Heldt was one of the most experienced players at VfB.
Heldt made the last game of his career on April 23, 2005. In the draw on matchday 30 of the 2004/05 season against VfL Wolfsburg , he was substituted on for Christian Tiffert 14 minutes before the end of the game . In the 2005/2006 season he did not get beyond the reserve role and did not play a Bundesliga game.
National team
On April 19, 1999, Horst Heldt was nominated by national coach Erich Ribbeck for the first time in the national team of Germany for the European Championship qualifier against Scotland on April 28 . He was in the starting eleven. On July 18, 1999, Heldt was nominated for the squad for the 1999 Confederations Cup in Mexico . official
VfB Stuttgart
He ended his playing career on January 3, 2006 and has been sports director of VfB Stuttgart ever since. At the beginning of his managerial career, he fired his old coach Giovanni Trapattoni and hired Armin Veh as the new coach. With the championship title for VfB in 2007 he achieved a great success. On June 19, 2007, he extended his contract prematurely until 2012. On July 1, 2009, Heldt moved up to the board of VfB Stuttgart, which had previously only consisted of President Erwin Staudt and CFO Ulrich Ruf . There he was responsible for the sports division. Since according to the statutes of VfB Stuttgart, a board member is always appointed to the board for at least four years, Heldt extended his contract with VfB until June 2013.
FC Schalke 04
In July 2010, Heldt moved to the board of directors of FC Schalke 04 and took over the sports / marketing department. After Felix Magath was dismissed from the board, he also took over the sports and communication department in spring 2011. As a successor to Magath as a trainer, Heldt signed Ralf Rangnick in March 2011 . Schalke closed the 2010/11 season by winning the DFB Cup.
For the 2011/12 season, Heldt reduced the number of players. 16 players left the team, some of them on loan. Among other things, Manuel Neuer was sold to Bayern Munich . In return, Heldt signed young players like Marco Höger or Teemu Pukki as well as experienced Bundesliga players like Christian Fuchs . In September Ralf Rangnick resigned as a trainer due to a burnout syndrome , his successor was Huub Stevens . As a reaction to the injury to goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann , Heldt brought in Timo Hildebrand, who had no contract, in October 2011 . At the end of the season Schalke was third in the table and qualified for the Champions League.
For the 2012/13 season, Heldt signed Tranquillo Barnetta and Roman Neustädter on a free transfer . In addition, Ibrahim Afellay was loaned from FC Barcelona for a year . After the weak first half of the season, Stevens was given leave of absence in December 2012. His successor was Jens Keller , with whom Heldt had already worked at VfB Stuttgart. After Stevens' release, Heldt was publicly criticized for the succession decision and for player commitments such as Barnetta, Chinedu Obasi and Ciprian Marica . From October 2014 to May 2015, Keller was followed by Roberto Di Matteo . He inherited this from June 2015 to André Breitenreiter .
After the end of the 2015/16 season, Heldt was replaced by Christian Heidel .
Hannover 96
On March 5, 2017, Heldt became manager of Hannover 96 . He replaced Martin Bader there. At the end of November 2017, Heldt held talks about a possible move with 1. FC Köln . However, these were canceled after the club management of Hannover 96 had not given him clearance. In April 2018, a move to VfL Wolfsburg failed because they could not reach an agreement on the amount of the transfer fee.
In the 2018/19 season, Hannover 96 was beaten on the last place in the table after the 28th matchday. The club and Heldt then split on April 9, 2019.
1. FC Cologne
On November 19, 2019, Heldt became the new sports director of the first division club 1. FC Köln . He succeeded Armin Veh and signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2021.
