The FIFA Confederations Cup 1999 ( English FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999 ) was the second playout this intercontinental football Competition for national teams under that name and care of FIFA and the fourth overall and took place from July 24 to August 4 in Mexico instead .

The two groups of four teams played each against each other. The two group winners each reached the semifinals. In the event of a tie between two teams, the decision on progress was made in the following order: the goal difference and goals scored from all group matches, the direct encounters between the teams concerned (number of points, goal difference, goals scored), and ultimately the fair play list or the lot. From the semi-finals onwards, the game was played in the knockout system . If the games of the final round were tied after the regular playing time of 90 minutes, there was extra time and possibly (if there was still no winner) a penalty shoot-out .

The first participation of the German national soccer team in a Confederations Cup was not very successful. The team of national coach Erich Ribbeck was eliminated after two defeats in the preliminary round.

Host and Gold Cup winner Mexico surprisingly won the tournament in the final against vice world and South American champions Brazil.

Venues

In the Aztec Stadium in the capital Mexico City the games of group A, a semi-final and the final, in the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, located at an altitude of 1,500 meters, the games of group B, a semi-final and the game for third place took place. The city, which is located about 500 km west of Mexico City, has very high temperatures in July and, due to its altitude, very thin air.

The German team

Since Germany competed with a number of reserve players, the tournament turned out to be a sporting disgrace for the team. Germany lost 4-0 to Brazil and 2-0 to the USA. The Confederations Cup so close to the start of the new season , which was supposed to open nine days after the final of the competition, was rejected by most of the players and participants. The late date (end of July) and the unusually high temperatures in Mexico, the long flight and the time change made the players from Europe big problems. In 1999 , national coach Erich Ribbeck had great difficulties in forming a good tournament team. With Oliver Kahn , Oliver Bierhoff , Dietmar Hamann , Andreas Möller , Jens Nowotny and Ulf Kirsten , important regular players of the national team stayed away from the tournament. Among the 20 participating players were seven who had played before the tournament and a total of ten who had not played a game for the German national team before the start of the year. The fact that those responsible at the DFB did not cancel participation in the competition, even though it was part of the Bundesliga season preparations, was mainly due to sports-political reasons. The entire environment thought very little of the competition and tolerated important regular players not taking part in the trip to North America . By participating attempted Germany, prior to the awarding of the 2006 World Cup by FIFA to influence in his favor.

Until the FIFA Confederations Cup in their own country in 2005 , Germany did not take part in this competition, even though it would have qualified for the 2003 tournament as the reigning runner-up . The players of the German national team had to play all preliminary round matches in Guadalajara , where they had major problems with the thin air at 1500 meters altitude, the extremely high temperatures and the time change. Ribbeck's weakened team lost two of the three preliminary round matches. The Germans lost the first game in the line-up Jens Lehmann , Christian Wörns , Jörg Heinrich , Thomas Linke , Mehmet Scholl , Dariusz Wosz , Lothar Matthäus , Michael Preetz , Oliver Neuville , Michael Ballack and Lars Ricken with 0: 4 against Brazil. In the second game between Germany and New Zealand , the team won 2-0. Olaf Marschall played for Dariusz Wosz . However, since the third game against the USA was lost again, Erich Ribbeck's team had to go home after the preliminary round. Jens Lehmann, Christian Wörns, Jörg Heinrich, Thomas Linke, Dariusz Wosz, Heiko Gerber , Lothar Matthäus, Michael Preetz, Oliver Neuville, Bernd Schneider and Horst Heldt played the last game with German participation . Bernd Schneider, Mustafa Doğan , Ronald Maul and Heiko Gerber made their debut in the German national team at the 1999 Confederations Cup . For Gerber and Maul it remained the only games in the national team, Doğan played in 1999 in the game against Turkey. For Schneider, however, it was the start of 80 more international matches.

Awards

Golden Ball The "Golden Ball" for the best player of the tournament went to the Brazilian Ronaldinho , the "Silver Ball" to the Mexican Cuauhtémoc Blanco and the "Bronze Ball" to the "Saudi" Marzouk Al-Otaibi .

Golden shoe Strangely enough, this category had the same ranking as the "Golden Ball". The Brazilian Ronaldinho received the "Golden Shoe" for his six tournament goals and four assists, the "Silver Shoe" went to the Mexican Cuauhtémoc Blanco and the "Bronze Shoe" to the "Saudi" Marzouk Al-Otaibi . Since three players had scored six goals each, first the number of assists and then the few minutes played decided the ranking.

FIFA Fair Play Trophy The fair play award for correct sporting behavior on and off the pitch went to the Brazilian national soccer team .
