The defender has played a total of 85 international matches (as of June 26, 2005) for Mexico. He played for Deportivo Toluca from 1994 to 2000 and at Atlante from 2000 to 2001 , then again for a season with Toluca, after a brief stint at Guadalajara , he moved to Cruz Azul in 2005 before the Confederations Cup in Germany .

The Mexican defense chief Salvador Carmona often played on the right wing. At the 1998 World Cup in France, he played two games. A little later in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup , he prevailed and became a regular player. The central defender was very strong at the head.

At the Confederations Cup 2005 he took part in the preliminary round matches Mexico against Japan (2-1) and against world champions Brazil (1-0). After the surprise victory against the "Selecao" he was suspended from the team alongside Aarón Galindo for doping and was banned from the Mexican association FMF for one year for taking the anabolic steroid norandrosterone. The International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) in Lausanne issued a lifelong ban on the Mexican national player on May 18, 2007 because he tested positive again during his suspension.
