Jens Nowotny (born January 11, 1974 in Malsch ) is a former German soccer player . He began his career in the men's division in 1992 at Karlsruher SC and moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1996 , where he reached three runners-up championships and the final of the Champions League in 2002 . In the Bundesliga he came to the positions of central defender and libero across clubs to 336 games in which he scored eleven goals. With a total of eight dismissals (five red , three yellow-red cards ), he is next to the Brazilian Luiz Gustavo the player who was sent off the field most frequently in the Bundesliga. In 2006 Nowotny moved to Croatia to Dinamo Zagreb for half a year and finally ended his career.

After he was active as a junior national player in Germany from 1988 to 1996, he played 48 games for the A-selection from 1997 to 2006 . With this he took part in the European Championships in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2000 and in Portugal in 2004 , and came third at the 2006 World Cup in his own country .

Career

Jens Nowotny played as a youth at SV Spielberg (1979–1985) and FC Germania Friedrichstal (1985–1990). During this time he went to school at the Karlsbad grammar school in Langensteinbach ( Karlsruhe district ); after the 10th grade he trained as a wholesale merchant . Due to a torn cruciate ligament , he was retired as unfit for the armed forces .

Nowotny is a member of the board of trustees of the Youth Football Foundation, which was founded in 2000 by Jürgen Klinsmann and other successful national players as well as the lecturers of the football teacher special course.

Club career

Karlsruher SC

The defender played for Karlsruher SC for six years from 1990 before moving to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the summer of 1996 .

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Under coach Christoph Daum, Nowotny immediately developed into a top performer and head of defense at Leverkusen. In his first season he played in 33 of 35 possible games and was mainly used in the libero position; He also contributed six templates to the team's success. After the almost relegation last season, they reached the runner-up this time with two points behind champions Bayern Munich . In the 1997/98 season , in which the Leverkusen played internationally again, Nowotny defended his regular place, but had to pause in several games in the fall of 1997 due to injury, so he only came to 32 of 49 possible games. In the following season , Nowotny's intensity of use did not change, so that he only missed three of 42 possible games. With the meanwhile 5: 1 in the 8: 2 away win against Borussia Mönchengladbach , he scored his first competitive goal for the Leverkusen, who achieved the club's highest victory in the Bundesliga to date. The rest of the season was again successful; Nowotny and the team finished second in the Bundesliga for the second time, but this time - again behind the Munich team - 15 points behind in first place. At the end of the 1999/2000 season , Leverkusen's chances of winning the championship were significantly better. Nowotny again only missed three of this time 45 possible games and thus stabilized the defense, which had to accept the second fewest in the competition with 36 goals conceded. Bayer Leverkusen were at the top of the table after a total of eleven match days, including before the last match day. However, the team lost this last game at SpVgg Unterhaching and was intercepted by Bayern Munich, who ended the season tied with Leverkusen but with the better goal difference in first place. Nowotny had to come to terms with second place in the Bundesliga for the third time in four years.

Despite a catastrophic EM 2000 for the German selection , in which the team was the last to be eliminated in the group stage and Nowotny played in his first major international tournament, he became one of the most sought-after defenders in European club football. In October 2000, Arsenal FC offered the equivalent of 40 million euros to bring him to the British capital as the successor to Tony Adams . Manager Reiner Calmund declined the offer. On April 30, 2002 Nowotny injured himself in the semi-finals of the Champions League , so that he could not take part in the 2002 World Cup . Nowotny also missed the season finale with Bayer Leverkusen with such important games as the Champions League final in Glasgow against Real Madrid or the DFB Cup final against FC Schalke 04 . At the beginning of the second half of the season in 2002/2003, Nowotny made his comeback after a six-month injury break in the home game against Energie Cottbus, which was lost 3-0. He tore a cruciate ligament again and was out for the rest of the season. In the following season, in which Bayer Leverkusen managed to return to the top group with a third place in the table under Klaus Augenthaler, he played 22 season games. On February 19, 2005, Nowotny suffered another cruciate ligament tear in the Leverkusen 4-2 away win in Nuremberg - the third in three years. He was only used again in the second half of the season against VfL Wolfsburg and played his last Bundesliga game for the Werkself on matchday 34 against Hannover 96.

Nowotny was temporarily banned from playing at Bayer 04 Leverkusen after he unsuccessfully sued the club for sick pay before the labor court in Solingen . He was allowed to continue training with the team and receive medical treatment. He continued to receive a salary, but never seemed allowed to play for Bayer again. In addition, the consulting firm von Nowotny (GTS) sued for a guaranteed bonus amounting to approx. 10.2 million euros; it was about the taxation of the sum. Nowotny's decision to complain aroused displeasure among the supporters, who then accused him of being greedy and taking advantage of the club. On December 22, 2005, it was announced that Nowotny and GTS would refrain from continuing the legal proceedings. In return, the club was ready to use Nowotny again from the second half of the 2005/06 season. In the home game against VfL Wolfsburg , he came on in the 79th minute and played his first competitive game in a year. In spring 2006 he announced that he would no longer play for Leverkusen from the coming season.

In an interview in April 2020, Nowotny said that immediately after his injury he was given a volume of books from Bayer Leverkusen, while the club's decision to stop paying wages had already been made. Two days after the gift was handed over, Nowotny learned of the association's decision through his advisor and felt deceived. In the conversation, he also accused Zoltan Sebescen of urging Zoltan Sebescen , without naming the player, despite an injury to the meniscus in April 2002, to remain available as a regular player during the season, and so is Sebescens to have favored later disability . After the final in the Champions League the month after, for which Sebescen was needed, the player played another 19 games in two years for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and had to end his career at the age of 29 due to the meniscus damage.

Dinamo Zagreb

On July 18, 2006 it was announced that Nowotny would continue his career at the Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb . He eventually signed a three-year contract. Due to ongoing injury problems, however, he only played ten games there. After only half a year, on January 11, 2007, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement when, due to a new injury, no joint sporting perspective could be found.

National team

For the national team Nowotny played 48 games in which he scored a goal. He made his debut in the national jersey on April 30, 1997 in Bremen in a 2-0 win against Ukraine .

Nowotny took part with the German national team in the EM 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium and in the EM 2004 in Portugal .

Due to good performances in the second half of the 2005/06 Bundesliga season, he was surprisingly invited to the fitness test by then national coach Jürgen Klinsmann , which took place on April 24th and 25th, 2006 in Düsseldorf . On May 15, 2006, Nowotny was finally appointed by Klinsmann in the squad for the 2006 World Cup . In the game for third place against Portugal (final score 3: 1), the veteran then played the first and only World Cup game of his career. Nowotny was only immediately before the start of the game for Robert Huth , who had been injured during warm-up training, and moved into central defense.

Nowotny played his last international match on August 16, 2006 in Gelsenkirchen against Sweden (final score 3-0).

End of career

In January 2007, Nowotny announced his retirement from professional football due to recurring knee problems. He played 336 Bundesliga games and scored 11 goals. With eight evictions (three yellow-reds, five reds) Nowotny holds the Bundesliga record for most field referrals; on April 29, 2017, Luiz Gustavo drew level with him.

After the active career

On October 8, 2007, a farewell game for Nowotny took place in the Karlsruhe Wildpark Stadium. The German national team competed as Mein Sommermärchen and the KSC Dream Team . Current national players and colleagues from the German team at the 2006 World Cup took part in both teams.

From 2009 to 2010 Nowotny was a full-time sports consultant at SC Fortuna Köln . He is co-owner of the Human Brands agency. In addition, Nowotny, as a partner in Mönchengladbach, maintains a restaurant in the Volksgarten and a beer garden at the recreation house .

social commitment

Nowotny is the patron of Kidshelp Kambodscha eV , an association to improve the living conditions of children in Cambodia .

Nowotny has been the ambassador of the German Children's Hospice Association since 2007. The association accompanies children with life-shortening illnesses and their families from diagnosis through to death.
