Ibrahim Afellay ( Arabic إبراهيم أفيلاي* April 2, 1986 in Utrecht , Netherlands ) is a Dutch football player of Moroccan origin. The attacking midfielder was most recently under contract with PSV Eindhoven .

Beginnings and the PSV

Afellay's first football club was USV Elinkwijk . His first coach put Afellay in the goalkeeping position at the age of eight. When a defender was missing, he became an outfield player and played in all positions in a short time. He later moved to the youth team at PSV Eindhoven . On February 4, 2004, he made his debut at the age of 17 in the cup match against NAC Breda for the club's first team. In the same season he came on another three missions in the league game operation. In the following season he had seven missions. In the 2005/06 season he moved into the starting line-up due to injuries to DaMarcus Beasley and Mika Väyrynen . On September 13, 2005, he made his UEFA Champions League debut against FC Schalke 04 . Since leading players like Johann Vogel and Mark van Bommel had left the club in the summer of 2005 , Afellay was able to play in the starting line-up and played 23 league games. From 2005 to 2008 he won the Dutch championship four times in a row with Eindhoven.

FC Barcelona

On January 1, 2011, Afellay signed a four and a half year contract with FC Barcelona. The transfer fee was three million euros. In addition, PSV Eindhoven was guaranteed a share in the transfer fee, which was contractually set at 100 million euros, in the event of a resale of Afellay. It was also agreed that the two clubs would play a friendly match at the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of PSV Eindhoven in 2013.

Afellay made his debut for Barça in the cup match against Athletic Bilbao on January 5, 2011. Three days later he played for Barcelona for the first time in the league in a 4-0 win against Deportivo La Coruña . On February 2, 2011, Afellay scored his first goal for Barcelona in the Copa del Rey against UD Almería . In the final of the Champions League 2010/11 he came on for Pedro in the 90th minute , Barça won the game 3-1 against Manchester United . In the 2011/12 season, Barcelona won the Supercup and the Spanish Cup.

Loan to FC Schalke 04

In the summer of 2012, Afellay was loaned to FC Schalke 04 for the 2012/13 season. He made his Bundesliga debut on September 1, 2012 (2nd match day) in a 3-1 win at home against FC Augsburg . On the 7th match day of the 2012/13 season he scored his first goal for the Royal Blues against VfL Wolfsburg . After a promising start to the season (including goals to the 0-1 in the derby at Borussia Dortmund and 2-2 at Arsenal in the Champions League), Afellay tore a hamstring towards the end of the first half of the season that left him long Should start combat. While working on his comeback, he suffered a muscle injury in the winter training camp, which meant the almost certain end of the season for him. In response to Afellay's failure, the club signed Michel Bastos . After the last home game, he was bid farewell in absentia in the Veltins-Arena without having played for Schalke again after his injury.

Return to Barcelona

After the end of the loan deal, Afellay returned to FC Barcelona for the 2013/14 season . Due to injuries, however, he was only used once in the league and in the cup.

Loan to Olympiacos Piraeus

For the 2014/15 season , Afellay moved to Olympiacos for a year on loan in the Greek Super League .

Stoke City

After the one-year loan expired, he moved to Stoke City and signed a contract valid until 2017, which was extended until June 2019, but was terminated in January 2019.

Return to Eindhoven

During the summer break of 2019 he returned to his youth club PSV Eindhoven .

National team

Ibrahim Afellay in 2011

Afellay is a Moroccan and Dutch national . He chose the Dutch national team , in which he made his debut on March 28, 2007. With the team, he was the youngest Dutch player to take part in three games at the 2008 European Championship .

Also at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he was part of the Dutch squad and played in three games of the eventual runner-up world champions. He scored his first goals in the national team in a brace on October 12, 2010 against Sweden . At the European Championships in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine , he was part of the Dutch squad.
