Van Bommel began his professional career at Fortuna Sittard , with whom he rose to the Eredivisie as champions of the 2nd division in 1995 and developed into a seasoned midfielder . In 1999 he moved to PSV Eindhoven and won four titles in six seasons. In 2005, FC Barcelona , Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund competed for the Eindhoven team captain , who drew attention to himself as a dangerous midfielder with his consistently good performances and the ability to score goals from the second row. FC Barcelona won the race and signed the international . When he arrived in Barcelona, he asked journalists to interview him in Spanish so that he could learn the language as quickly as possible.

For the season 2006/07 he joined after a year of playing time for the Catalans, with whom he, the Spanish championship and the Champions League had won, to Bayern Munich , where he received a three-year contract. According to the manager of FC Bayern, Uli Hoeneß , the transfer fee was six million euros . He made his debut for FC Bayern Munich on September 9th in the DFB-Pokal match against FC St. Pauli . He made his Bundesliga debut on September 16, 2006 (4th matchday) in a 1: 2 defeat at Arminia Bielefeld . In this away game, he scored his first goal for the club with the opening goal to make it 1-0 in the sixth minute.

On August 9, 2008, coach Jürgen Klinsmann appointed him to succeed Oliver Kahn as captain of Bayern Munich. He became the first foreign player to permanently wear the captain's armband for the German record champions. Van Bommel also remained captain under his compatriot Louis van Gaal from 2009. With the statement "My captain always plays" he was guaranteed a regular place. With Bayern, he won the double of the German championship and the DFB Cup in 2008 and 2010 . He also led his team to the 2010 Champions League final , which was lost to Inter Milan .

After the relationship between van Bommel and van Gaal worsened and his regular seat was in danger, van Bommel prematurely terminated the contract, which ran until the summer of 2011, in agreement with FC Bayern Munich and switched - after VfL Wolfsburg had also expressed interest - on 25 January 2011 for the Italian first division club AC Milan . A day later he made his debut for AC in a 2-1 victory in the quarter-final of Coppa Italia against Sampdoria Genoa . His debut in Serie A in a 2-0 win at Catania Calcio on January 29, 2011 (22nd matchday) ended after 54 minutes, as he was sent off with the yellow-red card . With the Milanese he won the championship and on August 6th in Beijing the Supercup with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan .

After his contract with AC Milan was not renewed, van Bommel returned to PSV Eindhoven during the summer break of 2012, where he signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2013. For Eindhoven he played in the shirt with the shirt number 6. He lost the Dutch Cup final with PSV on May 9, 2013. On the last day of the 2012/13 season, van Bommel saw the yellow-red card and announced his retirement after the game. On July 19, 2013, his farewell match took place in Eindhoven , which was attended by international football stars and former teammates. Van Bommel in the European Championship group game against Germany on June 13, 2012

Van Bommel made his debut in his country's senior national team on October 7, 2000 in a 4-0 win over Cyprus . Since Elftal failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup and an Achilles tendon injury forced him to cancel shortly before the 2004 European Championship in Portugal , he had to wait a long time to participate in a major tournament. The 2006 World Cup in Germany was van Bommel's first major tournament. During the qualification, van Bommel only appeared six times in twelve games because the Dutch national coach Marco van Basten was dissatisfied with his performance. Although the relationship between coach and player spoke against a nomination, van Basten appointed him to the Dutch squad . In the finals he was used in three out of four games.

After the World Cup, van Bommel was no longer considered for the two qualifying games for the 2008 European Championship against Luxembourg and Belarus . He declined the appeal for the game against Bulgaria , saying that he “no longer wanted to play for the Netherlands under Marco van Basten”.

After the EM 2008 Bert van Marwijk became the new bond coach, whereupon van Bommel expressed his interest in wanting to play for the national team again, with the words “I always said that I wanted to go back when Marco van Basten is gone. Now he's gone, and it just so happens that my father-in-law is the new Bondscoach. If he needs me, I'll be there. ” Stated.

In August 2008, van Marwijk nominated his son-in-law van Bommel for an international test match against Russia . He then played for the Elftal in seven of the eight qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup and scored one goal each in the away games in Norway and Iceland.

Van Bommel was also in the squad for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. With the Netherlands he reached the World Cup final for the first time in 32 years , which was lost on July 11, 2010 with 0: 1 to European champions Spain .

After his return, van Bommel became a regular player and an important pillar in the national team. Before qualifying for the 2012 European Championship began , van Bommel was named the Elftal's new team captain . He thus succeeded Giovanni van Bronckhorst , who previously held this position until his retirement after the 2010 World Cup.

After the Netherlands left the European Championship in 2012, he ended his national team career on June 20, 2012.

Career as a coach

In the summer of 2018 van Bommel's engagement as head coach of PSV Eindhoven began . In its first season , the team won the runner-up under their former player. After losing in the group stage of the Europa League and already ten points behind leaders Ajax Amsterdam , the Dutchman was sacked after the 17th matchday of the 2019/20 season in Eindhoven.

Unsportsmanlike conduct

Mark van Bommel was repeatedly criticized for unsportsmanlike conduct and abuse during his time at Bayern Munich . In February 2007 he was suspended for a provocative gesture towards Real Madrid fans in the UEFA Champions League . In March 2007 van Bommel tried to hit his opponent Pavel Pardo from VfB Stuttgart with his elbow, but he failed. Although there were massive protests and criticism in the media, van Bommel was acquitted by the DFB control committee. In July of the same year, van Bommel pinched his opponent Fernando Meira's genitals during a league cup game . Subsequent investigations by the DFB led to a suspension of three games due to "grossly unsportsmanlike behavior". In February 2008, van Bommel used his elbow against Rafael van der Vaart from Hamburger SV and received the yellow-red card in the same game due to a provocation to the referee. In addition, additional investigations into obscene gestures towards the referee were initiated. In April 2008 van Bommel was sent off against VfL Bochum in the 27th minute of the game for repeated foul play with yellow-red. In August 2008, van Bommel was sent off with a yellow-red card in a Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund for using his elbow against Tamas Hajnal .

Ottmar Hitzfeld , long-time coach of FC Bayern Munich , coined the term aggressive leader with regard to van Bommel and repeatedly defended his unsportsmanlike behavior on the pitch. However, van Bommel was repeatedly attacked by the media because of his playing style. For example, he was and is known as "Rüpel" and "Rambo".

Others

In 2010 van Bommel was honored with a language prize from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). The VU language center examined the speaking habits of 26 Dutch national players in their mother tongue. Van Bommel argues best in the opinion of linguists. His rhetoric is well developed, and he does not use the empty phrases of footballer's language. As soon as van Bommel leaves the field, he analyzes the game in an understandable way. After an award for coach van Gaal, Van Bommel's award was the second language award for employees of FC Bayern Munich.

He is married to Andra, the daughter of the football coach Bert van Marwijk , and has three children.
