Fernando Meira [ fɯɾˈnɐ̃ðu ˈmɐiɾɐ ] (born June 5, 1978 in Guimarães ; actually Fernando José da Silva Freitas Meira ) is a former Portuguese football player .
Career in the club
In Portugal
The defensive all-rounder began his career in his hometown with Vitória Guimarães and received his first professional contract there. In the 1998/1999 season he was loaned to FC Felgueiras , but returned to Vitória the following season and subsequently became team captain . At the beginning of the 2000/01 season he moved to Benfica Lisbon , where he was also team captain.
VfB Stuttgart
From January 2002 Meira was under contract with VfB Stuttgart. He moved into the Champions League with VfB in 2003 and 2007 . He underwent an own goal against Chelsea (0: 1; 0: 0), which meant that VfB was eliminated from the competition. In March 2006, he prematurely extended his contract, which originally ran until 2007, to 2010.
Before the 2006/07 season, he was team captain. In his first season as captain of VfB, after winning the German championship, he was presented with the championship trophy from Guido Buchwald , who himself received the trophy in 1992 as VfB captain. It was the first title win in Meira's career. Before the 2008/09 season Meira was deposed as team captain by coach Armin Veh .
Galatasaray Istanbul
Meira signed a contract with Galatasaray Istanbul on July 22, 2008 until June 30, 2012 . On August 17, 2008 in the final against Kayserispor, he and his new team won the Turkish Supercup.
Zenit Saint Petersburg
On March 10, 2009, Meira moved to Zenit Saint Petersburg . A year later, Meira lost his place in the starting XI.
Real Zaragoza
In the summer of 2011 Meira moved to the Primera División for Real Saragossa . On February 1, 2012, he terminated his contract due to injury problems and a lack of fitness.
Career in the national team
Meira had been a national player since 2000. It has not yet been taken into account for the 2002 World Cup . After Luiz Felipe Scolari had become the coach of the Portuguese national soccer team in 2003 , Meira came to regular appearances, but was not nominated for the EM 2004 in Portugal either. He was only part of the squad at the 2006 World Cup and played his first major tournament for Portugal. The team advanced to the semi-finals , but were eliminated there against France and finally lost in the game for third place against Germany. Meira played all seven games for his team. He was also nominated for the 2008 European Championship in Switzerland and Austria, but was only used as a substitute.
